Hi,

What is the biggest cal. allowed for small game hunt in Ontario? I am wondering can I bring my 38-55 to a small game hunt this winter. I am Ottawa resident.

Thanks

Look in the regulations, there is a section that specifies caliber for small game. These restrictions are generally a southern Ontario thing, you should be ok in the Ottawa area but check the regs. Also, I am not sure where you are located but some townships have a caliber restriction on discharge of firearms or hunting. Give your township that you wish to hunt a call and ask. The cops in a lot of areas don't know the rules and I would much rather ask the township than the local police.

The biggest small game calibre that can be used in Ontario I believe is anything up to a .275! So your 38-55 would not be permitted. How ever in some areas you can go bigger but you had better check your regs on the area you plan to hunt in.

Dave.

Again check the regs, The only areas with the .275 restriction are heavily populated, mostly southern Ontario. CHECK THE REGS!!

What's the difference??

That's stupid regulating small game calibers.

A 45-70 will take a out a rabbit (he,he and how!), what difference is it to the Gov't what you use to take a chicken or a crow out?

Big Game I understand, but there is no caliber made that is not suitable for small game.

"...that can be used in Ontario I believe is anything up to a .275..." No. Only a small part of Southern Ontario has the idiotic calibre restriction. West of K-W. Not all of it. Reading the regs is a good idea though. Where in S. Ont is important. So is what game you intend to hunt. A light cast bullet for your .38-55 might be ok.
