Im in the same boat... I just handled a very small leupold that had incredible clarity and light gathering, very small roof prism design and I couldnt believe the clarity. trouble is, they were 500 bones !

Id like something in the 300 dollar range...

Try the Columbia (Kruger optics) Timberline from Cameraland. Don't be scared off by the price. They are VERY good optics for a mid-price unit (despite the $59 price tag).

I just ordered the vortex viper 6X32 for $230, cause i want something handy and WANTED a viper, but my heart wanted an 8x... zeiss conquest eh?? i see it for 449???
