Here are two photos of my Grandfather. One is 1948 and the other is perhaps in the 1960s. Can you please identify species for me. One looks like Canada Goose and the other looks like Heron? Would love to know and I know there are experts out there that can help me with this. :)

Not a heron but a crane. Okay. Were they good eating? That is close to a 9' or 10' wing span! Now that I have looked at it is is more like 8'. Still.

You can still hunt them in some places, SK and MB for sure. The young ones(brown) are half decent, the older grey ones are tough as nails. I didn't enjoy them, especially when there's grouse, ducks and geese available.

Herons on the other hand were considered a delicacy in Medieval Europe, but I doubt they taste any good, like many things back then and most delicacies now.

Yes, that is correct... "You're not much of a bird hunter,eh? :)" Just Starlings. But they are not good eating. LOL! :) that is why I am trying to tap into what my Grandfather did close to 65 years ago. :)

Awesome pics of your grandfather! Here in Saskatchewan you can hunt Canada Geese and Sandhill Cranes. Limits on the Canada Geese would be 8 geese per day with a possession limit of 24 and the Cranes would be a limit of 5 per day with a possession limit of 15. Not sure what they were back when your grandfather was hunting but you could probably easily find it with Google. :)

Sandhill indeed. We enjoy eating them and take many each fall. Eyes like an eagle and an attitude like a badger when wounded.

Wow. I've dared my sons to put on welding mits and reach into the den of a badger. If they are able to "### it" (determine if it is male or female) correctly they get $100. None have tried. LOL!

My Grandfather lived in Lannigan and Yorkton. Not sure of what dates he was in each place. I think Lannigan during WWII ( he was a Squadron Leader - Navigator) and after the war I think they moved to Yorkton where he first started out as an Liquor Inspector (oh the shame), but then started buying properties, like apartments and such. If there are CGN in Lannigan I would love to get in touch. I am also researching my family heritage. Hence the interest in the Remington Model 10 and which birds were hunted. I'll trade any information that you might have for a postcard photo from Egypt in 1944 of a topless indigenous female near the great pyramids. :) Or if that is troublesome. I've got pictures of mass grave markers as well.

Yes you would have to be braver than you are smart and very desperate to end up ###ing a badger!

My post was in jest. I have not actually put my son's up to this. But in my imagination, this would be a spectacle to behold. Doesn't even come close to hunting grizzlies with a bow. Those guys are girly boys when it come to bare handing a badger to determine its ###. LOL!
