Birdshot in Slug barrel

I have never tried it myself. Maybe I should. I would think however, that it would cause no real damage preasure-wise. As far as damaging the bore, the wad shouldnt be really all that different from a sabot, both plastic. Homebrewed sabot loads often use a conventional wad last I checked. The problem will be that the rifling will engage the wad and spin the shot. As the shot leaves the barrel spinning, cyntrifical (SP) will take effect and the shot pattern will have a hole in it. Extreme close range shouldnt be a problem though. If I remember properly, mossberg offered a Home Defence 410 Pump based on the 500 series platform that had "spreader" choke on it. I believe it was a twist rifled choke designed to spread the shot (most likely bird shot!)

I will have to try it if I ever manage to get out to the range. :D

Nothing bad will happen. You will most likely get crappy patterns. Depending on the load you might get lead or plastic build up in the rifling but nothing that can't be cleaned out.

How about the opposite. Is it OK to shoot slugs through smooth bore bbls, assuming you don't have a choke?

With out a choke, you will most likely ruin your threads (unless you have a fixed cylinder bore.) I have shoot many slugs out of a smoothbore. Just use rifled slugs :D . Sabot slugs have been shot out of a smoothbore with a rifled choke tube. However, I never have. SOme Sabots are designed only for a rifled barrel which seems to have heavier walls on the barrel.
