grade 1 quite good shale other than barrel is 2 or 3 inches shorter done by a gunsmith i think

if in pretty good shape is there a problem with accuracy perhaps

re-sale would be really tough would it not ?

have a number in mind by not sure he would be happy but would like to try one and then re-sell if not to my liking but don’t want to lose a couple hundred as would rather buy new or go to a grade II

Good question, but for me...I'm a person who would have to have a very good reason to shorten a factory barrel. I'd rather buy a shorter barrel, pick a different gun or only shorten if there was damage done to it. In other words, I'd be wondering why it was shortened..and I'd be assuming the worst. lol

If everything else checks out and the gun is an appealing deal otherwise?

For me, I'd take the value of a Grade 1 in comparable condition and take about $250 off that number. If you ever go to sell it down the road, remember that there are buyers who wouldn't consider a BL-22 with a cut barrel at all, and others who might ONLY if it represents a great deal.

My own BL-22 was very used when I got it, and had a couple of issues. (rear sight tired/flopping down...and the buttstock is slightly warped) I picked a well-used BL-22 because of the value it represented, this one you're looking at might be great for your needs/budget?

Do not pass Grade II , do not waste your time with the get out of jail free card (re-sell on the EE when not happy)
My reasoning is you are concerned with possible accuracy or lack there off.
Kinda like being a cautious investor with minimal risk tolerance.

Cutting 3 inches off a BL 22 barrel seems like a lot of work.

That puts the new length behind the existing barrel band /mag tube support, front site would have to move back, mag tube and brass tube need to be shortened, and newly cut mag tube would need a slot for the brass tube to lock into.

That's running up a big gunsmith bill.

All that said I'd buy one if it was done nicely.

How short? Factory length is 20" for standard model and 16.25" for the micro midas.
If it's shorter than 18" and longer than 16.25" I wouldn't go near it.

It's a fairly costly conversion with an end result of less shell capacity, less sight radius and a slightly shorter overall length and a decrease in value for 99% of future buyers. A costly conversion where that cost will most likely never be regained.

If crowned correctly accuracy should not suffer, quite possibly be better. Velocity may be down a bit with high velocity ammo.

why to what
I'll bite.... :)

Why is your original post so disjointed? I think a few of the people responding to this thread did not even understand what you are asking given some of the responses.

Here's some more lingering questions,

How much does the seller of this modified shorter barrel BL-22 want for it?
Got any pictures?
Have you seen the gun in person?

Did someone tell you the barrel was shortened or is this an assumption and perhaps it is a factory Micro Midas?

Are you looking for a short barrelled BL22? Looks like Sail in Laval has the Mircro Midas in stock for $960 plus tax etc.

called him again to ight and he says the BUTT stock has been shortened and not the barrel

explains a lot

and he wants me to set a price as he does not wish to give it away so I am nervous to insult or over bid

so not that big of a deal

still struggling with a grade 1 or II to buy
would like to buy new if xmas or black friday sales are on as not sure what to offer as he is a older friend

Offer him $500, I like the basic model, the only thing I like in the grade 2 is the checkering, engravings and gold triggers don't do it for me personally.

People that won't name a price, specially old friends are not people that I worry to much about offending with an offer...... :)

$500-$600 was the going price of a nice clean BL-22 grade 1 a few years back but now everything has gone up a few hundred at least.... the short stock probably offests half of the price increase.

I was going to add-when I got my BL-22 I thought I'd buy a used buttstock to replace the warped one on mine....but there weren't any on the used market. I then explored a new/replacement one-pretty sure the number was around $300 +/- when the dust settled. It's slightly warped towards a right-handed shooter, so actually pretty comfortable. Adds character. lol

I have added a block of walnut to extend a shotgun stock once and it works, but a very obvious alteration even done cleanly.

I'd probably decide if I can live with the shorter stock and if I can't (or can't extend cleanly)...my offer might be the value of a G1 used BL-22 in the same condition, less the cost of securing a new buttstock. Depends on your appetite for the work, or ordering/installing a new one.

A slip on butt pad will likely correct the length of pull ghetto style and as .22lrguy points out nicer wood work could be done if the length of pull is a problem..... it's also pretty easy to adjust the shooting stance to take up an inch or two of missing stock length.

hey thanks to all for NOT calling me stupid even though I was

he said ——— he shortened the rifle to get less weight although not much and the accuracy is the same, easier to swing left and right to get on target, can’t really tell it was shortened and I thought it was the barrel

conversation was slow as he has a speech impediment a lot and he went on to say other things before i got a chance to follow up

he is 76 and has primers and other rifles i want to help him sell but friendship omly goes so far as don't wish to pack up his rifles up and resend them once sold and deal with feds and so on,
might suggest he spread the rifles around a couple to each of his old friends to reduce the stress on all of us

thanks so far will let you know how it turns out
might try to make a deal with sail, anyone think they will discount as they normally wont get me as a walk in client

Never hurts to ask for a deal, lever actions are kind of hot right now though and there is not lots of stock... plus dealers just got kicked in the nuts with the rest of us..... :(
