Anyone have back stories ? I mean are they really to stop the glint of the bayo ? How much more are they worth, a local shop has some for 250... Damn I want one, not even to shoot... Just to have. (God I hate cleaning corrosive, also super lazy)
I have a exact one like yours.
I was really lucky and picked one up at International Sports last year at their Xmas sale, paid $149. I put it in a black Tapco Interfuse stock, looks wicked.
AS far as I know the black bayo was made for refurbs and not to stop glint or anything like that. I suspect they just had some kicking around that had been changed for whatever reason.
Here's a pic of me with it....

The bottom rifle in my picture above is a 54 Izzy, polished bayo.mY BUDDY JUST BOUGHT A USED 54 IZZY WITH A BLACK BAYO. i AM PARTIAL TO THE STEEL COLOURED ONES
Lookz like a Wicked place to shoot! That Tapco stock is def. one of the better looking ones for the SKS. I have the exact same set up. {Minus the back bayo} but I have some bbq paint somewhere.. but then again it's a Spike anywayz...$250 seems High for a Russian these days, Corwin I think has them for $219. & Plenty on EE for $200 range.
That'd be a preservative/rust inhibiter. Nothing to do with stopping glints. Think about Soviet/ChiCom military doctrine. Hordes of illiterate conscripts charging across the Steppes.
I wouldn't count on buying anything like a bayonet in Cambodia.
