Just looking for advice, I'm looking to get a bear this year.

So...

- How do you identity a male?
- Can you use bait in BC? (No illegal)
- Can you use calls? (Predator/distress)
- What terrain do they like?
- What do they eat aside from people food?

And...

- What not to do?

Any advice is appreciated thanks.

With JT as our "leader" bears are identified as bears, maybe just animals, and are gender neutral. As long as there are no little bears with the big bear at that moment you may be good to go.

You could use a call but under JT and Wynn you may hurt the bear's feelings for singling it out from the rest of the animals.

Bears like any type of terrain that is funded and paid for by hard working tax payers.

Good luck on your next hunt.

On the lighter side.... Google search is your best friend.

No bait for bears in BC. Yes you can use a call. You will find them where there is food..... grazing on grass along a road, digging through old logs on a clear cut etc. As long as theres no cubs around your good to go.

Feel free to pee from your stand. They don't seem to mind. Use a thermacell, or spray bug dope on a tree a few times before you hunt so they are used to the smell

No bait good to know. I'm assuming the cubs stay close?

As a first time bear hunter it's easy to make the common mistake of shooting the first bear you see, only to find out it is tiny. Ask me how I know lol. Look for small round ears, blocky head, and legs that appear short for the body. Nothing is foolproof but as a rule it works out. Hunting bc is great, lots of South facing slopes for quick green up and tonnes of bears. If you are going to call, watch your back religiously they can come in any time from anywhere and grizzly are also responsive. Have fun and don't forget to update us with pics!

In the spring, look for dandelions in bloom. Bears seem to love them.
As indicated, don't shoot a bear with cubs [illegal] And at times the
cubs are up a tree or a bit away from mama, so be careful.
As mentioned, look for small, rounded ears, well separated on the head,
short appearing legs. and a good "Roman" nose, lol. This will be a bigger
bear. D.

Yep. And lions will come in to those predator calls too. Have a rock wall at your back or get a buddy and sit back-to-back.

Oh, and every bear is different. Just because the first 3 or 4 might bolt at the sight of you, the next one might just stand there and wait to be shot - or ...

South slope water-courses are going to green up first... get onto those fast, before everything else greens up, because it really helps narrow down the realestate you have to cover.

Anything that will kill a deer will do a black bear in.
I like persuasion from the 6.5x55 up, with the 7mms
a favorite. Dave.

I think he means "game call".

Fawn in distress or rabbit in distress will work. Anything that sounds like something experiencing a horrific death.

Search for "predator call".
