Had a nice decent sized boar stalk into my bait area last night. I was in a climber stand up 10' on the downward edge of some very high thick bush. Bait out in front 30 yards with a small shooting lane straight ahead and a marshy cut to my left. At 530 pm I hear the bear approach the bait coming in at a good walk. Then it stopped bout 50 yards away. Can't see a damn thing. 20 mins later a branch snaps 30 yards from me then silence. Then I hear woof. Not a Lil woof. A big woof. I take the safety off. I hear his breathing getting closer coming right at my stand. I still can't see anything. At a bit 20 yards the woofing became an angry growl an teeth snapping. Now I'm glad I used a stand for once. All goes quiet for several minutes then a big stomp branches swaying an another stomp. This is when I realize he's coming fast one more crash an then I see black an snap shoot. I gave him the right barrel of my double rifle and covered the base of my tree with the other barrel ready. I could hear it flopping but couldn't see anything. I Waited 15 mins before my decent to the ground. With the Gun at the ready I slowly walked the 12 yards to my bear almost stepping on it before seeing it. I caught it in the neck and exited the other side in front of the shoulder. I hell of the thrill I must say. He didn't have the wind on me th whole time I could hear him

The speed at which he rushed in was amazing and I'm glad I had my 45/70 and not my 25/06. He's missing all the toes on his front right paw though. Completely healed over.

Has anyone else had a black bear charge the stand?
The berries are everywhere but I'm using meat as bait

I assume he wanted to scare me away from his bait pile but he brought teeth n claws to a gun fight

Had a similar incident years ago with a black bear but I was only 6 feet or so off the ground in a treestand....the bear was coming to a bait I had on a cutline ( in alberta) and stopped to look directly at me at 30 yards, when he turned his head the other direction I shot him in the chest with my 308 semi. He went down like he was hit with the "hammer of thor" but a second later was up and in full charge coming at the stand. Even though I had a semi auto, I only had time to pull the trigger twice by the time he covered the distance. The last shot caught him in the head at less than 3 feet from the end of the muzzle. I'll never know if he thought the tree was a good place to hide or if he was in fact coming for me. Its truly amazing how fast they can move!

"...speed at which he rushed in..." Yogi can run at 35 mph. That's less than 6 seconds to cover 100 yards.
"...I'm using meat as bait..." Shouldn't be using yourself as bait. snicker.

Good for you for shooting swiftly and accurately under pressure, congrats on the bear!

I think if I were in your stand during the charge my only thought would be "Hanes or Fruit of the Loom" if I made it out alive...

Edited to add: Yogi outruns Yorgi anyday...

I've got pics but don't know how to post from a bbz10. The Internet sucks here. On star can't find us when we do get a weak signal. Lol. He's not my biggest bear but I'd guess 250/275lb. Now time to focus on taking a wolf

In 2010 I went to check for the presumed hit I had made on a bear from my treestand. With rifle in hand I stepped over a log and heard a similar woof in front of me. I looked up and the bear was about 20 yds off bouncing on its front feet. He charged and I was able to get off a quick (and thankfully effective) shot into his front end. The distance at the start was just under 25 yards and shot was at about 10. I ran back up the tree essentially after hearing the bush erupt with trees being knocked down etc. as he was dying and I could have used the mega pack of depends at the time. Learned a valuable lesson and will never forget that moment. He's the one in my avatar.
