Hey guys, I picked up an SKS with Laminate sock the other day from my local Can-tire and stipped it down. The rifle is pretty standard for an sks but when I took it apart I noticed the bolt was a black color not a silver type color that I have been accustomed to seeing. Whats up with that? It's a 1951 production.

Not to meantion that it looks like it has never ever been used. the barrel under the gas piston has labelling on it that I am also not used to seeing.

Anyone else with an sks that looks like this?

I'll post pictures of it later.

Painted black bolt is used during refurbished process. If anything that a person refurbishing does not like he paints it black. Mostly it is to cover small rust or repair that was done. Remove black paint and you will see what was wrong.

I personally think this was a variation in the refurb process, as I have seen crates of 'black bolt rifles', crates of 'black bayonet rifles', etc.

I don't think they packed crates with all 'flawed' rifles, I think it was just the taste of the week when it came to refurbing these pieces.

I have a black bolt 1950 that I stripped down. At the store (Lever), it was a choice between black bayonet or black bolt rifles. As mentioned before, it's just a different form of refurbishment.

I picked one up two weeks ago...1953 Tula, multiple refurbs on this puppy...some non matching parts n stock....will make a good shooter with the 1 on the sight post I hope. My bolt carrier is shiny silver but the bolt is a nice black..like yours.

The markings on the barrel are Molot markings. Russian export company markings. You are also likely to find <RNC> markings on other parts and the receiver as well with these.

The local Canadian Tire here has SKSs with black bolts and black bayos , they looked good at a distance......but upon closer inspection it was clear that alot of black paint had been used on touch up including the barrel......plus the mag was pinned internally rather than with the rivet through the bottom of the mag . I kind of wonder which SKS importers pin their mags by which method , this may give us some idea who the importer was as they say there have only been three major importers of SKSs into Canada.....?
