Black gun blasting loads

Hi!

I'm looking for a suggestion or three for a blasting - grade .223 load for use in my AR15. I am looking for cheap thrills here! Accuracy is nice, but not as important as low cost loads... Most of my shooting is going to be inside 100 yds and over irons or a future reflex type sight.

I'll worry about an accuracy load later in the winter, once I have one or two good blaster loads together.

Any suggestions?

Kyle

Keep your eyes open for surplus ammo - often it is cheaper than reloading. You might even luck out and get brass with boxer primers, although the primers will be crimped in.

Short of that try Remington or Winchester 55 gr soft point bulk bullets and 26.0 grs of Win-748. I'd stay well clear of the FMJ bulk bullets. I had some one time that wouldn't group better than 12"@100 with a stock Remington 700 .222, and when I tricked that gun out with a Gaillard Barrel the groups shrunk to 4". Back to Sierras I went. Buy a few different types of the bulk bullets to see what your rifle prefers then buy them a thousand at a time.

For reloads, try this: 55gr Hornady FMJBT ($8.00/100 from Higginson) and 23gr of WC-835 ($17.00/lb from Higginson), your favourite small rifle primer and whatever empty cases you can scrounge from the range or your buddy :p This load shoots about 1.5 to 2" at 100y in my Colt 20" AR15 HBAR. Contrary to Boomer's experience, I've never had a problem shooting the bulk 55gr Hornady FMJBT bullets :)

Rifledude,

That is the same load as mine but I use the Winchester bulk 55gr from Higginsons. They group as well as American Eagle ammo.

I didn't try the Hornady FMJ, but the Winchester's were horrid. The new Gaillard barrel was a 1:7 twist, and even that didn't help. I think those Winchester slugs might of been a bit long for their weight, but if memory serves they were 55 gr. FMJBT's.
