Before I spend any money on an aftermarket stock for a shorty 870 express, does anybody have any words of wisdom on stocks? A search showed a few comments on cheek slap and how to avoid it, and one comment on installation. Mostly comments were positive.

Is there a stock you would recommend over the BH???

I had the gen 1 Spec Ops recoil reducing stock on my HP9 and swapped back to the stock...stock. I can't really tell which seems to kick less but I felt like the end of the recoil impulse with the spec ops stock was kinda a "wobble". Either way, my 887 shoots softer than either one despite being a lighter gun, and it just has a big squishy recoil pad.

I had the Spec Ops, and didn't like the slap in the face.

I do however like the product, but prefer the Non-Recoil model, the Spec Ops NRS. A bit cheaper to. I find it easier to control.

The Blackhawk! forend though I think sucks balls. Every one I have seen has a funny curve to them and they didn't sit right.

Take a look at the Mesa Urbino or the other models they have to offer. A bit more, but more comfy I think.

Eventually Ill go with Mesa, at some point down the road.

I've got the Spec Ops gen 2 for my Mossberg 590... I can slightly tell the difference in the recoil with smaller loads, such as when clay shooting 7 1/2 shot. Slugs? Can't tell the difference. Also, with the Gen 2, there isn't as bad of a cheek slap as with the Gen 1 version.

The good thing about the 870 is that your safety is not a top-located thumb toggle. You will not have any difficulty with your safety mechanism with the Blackhawk! stock installed. On my Mossberg, I wish my thumb was an additional 3 inches longer to reach the safety switch. The pistol ergonomics makes it impossible to reach up for the safety without letting go with either hand.

I agree with A.T.R. though - the fore-end sucks. Very awkward-looking design.

In summary - The Blackhawk! stock is "decent" on my Mossberg, but will be better on your 870.
