Hi all,

As I'm about to order a marauder kit one things really bugs me. I'd like the rifle to be completely black, and the bright stainless of the bolt annoys me. Anyone knows of a way to darken it without hindering function? Thought about paint but afraid the extra thousands/hundreds would somehow be a problem down the road. Also I am pretty sure paint would end up chipping. Any thoughts?

Are they carbon steel or stainless? Bluing reacts with the iron in steel, without it the process will not work. Stainless steel eliminates the iron to help prevent corrosion thus you cannot blue quality stainless. Some lower quality stainless steels have some iron in them so some can be blued to varying degrees. If they are still carbon steel then I will be sandblasting the exposed side of mine and cold bluing for a matte finish. If its stainless then Ill blast and spray with VHT flameproof ceramic header paint. Tough stuff when fully cured.

I bought the Kidd black bolt from Fabsports a while back. If you are in the market for a new bolt it's amazing. It comes with the Kidd extractor. Makes the 10/22 much more reliable. Pleasure to shoot. Had my 3 year old and 5 year old daughters shooting it on Father's Day. They shot about 350 rounds without a stoppage even with cheap 555s.

From the Kidd website..

take the oem bolt and just cold blue it ... it what I did to mine. I would suggest giving it a good polishing first to take off any burrs and imperfections from the milling process. Make sure to thoroughly degrease it first or the bluing will come out blotchy or not blue at all.

take your time .. I hosed mine down with degreaser I picked up at wally world. Then doused it with boiling water to really clean it out, then dried it right away with a hair dryers. Took fine steel wool to it just to clean it up some more. Bought some Birchwood Casey Cold Blue and did 3 applications. rinse with cold water and dry between applications.

Once complete give it a fine coating of gun oil and reinstall ... go shooting.

The one pictured I didn't give it a good polishing, so there was still some grit to the cycling of the bolt. I've since taken it out and you can see where the bolt comes into contact with the inside of the receiver and the bluing wore off.
