Scotch-Brite pads come in different Course grades you can find them in any place that sells auto body repair surplys they even come in flapper wheels that you can mount in a drill .
If it's the same stuff thats on my bolt and carrier, I never did find a chemical stripper that would attack it. I don't know what it is but it's still on there, not even dulled.
I used Circa 1893 gel stripper and fine steel wool. Then I used my Dremel with buff pads and polishing compound. The black crap came off, but the bolt and carrier stayed a dull grey colour, kind of like my Chicom SKS's.
Methyl Hydrate puts a dent in it. I don't want to scratch it up as I will be polishing by hand with Mother's wheel polish. I know - it's only an SKS...
I'll pick up some Circa 1850! later today. Does this stuff eat through nitrile gloves? (Yes - slowly).
Luckily only the bolt body is coated - the firing pin, retainer and extractor were just dull and they polished up beautifully. I think I will leave the coating on the rifle as this one will be the "shooter".
First image shows the bolt soaking in methyl hydrate (normally clear). Second - after scrubbing with Circa 1850. Last one - after running through the tumbler with red walnut media.
Collector67 - I am willing to bet your bolt carrier would shine right up with some Mother's. All my parts were also dull before I polished them up.
