I was out sneaking around my friend's farm this morning to see if anything was around. I had been hunting his place almost all week. I missed one last Sunday and haven't seen anything since. I was very frosty this morning and the ground was frozen hard making walking sort of crunchy. I did my normal walk around and saw nothing. Decided it was time to call it quits and head home.
Just as I came around the end of his machine shed I saw a doe on the bush edge of his hay field at about 150 yards and walking slowly across the field. I crouched down and made over to his wood pile to be better hidden from view. As I stuck my head up I notice 2 more coming out of the bush and following the first one. I sighted on the larger of the 3 and waited for a decent shot. She turned broadside to me at around 125 yards and looked like she thought something was wrong so I aimed a couple of inches below her back, in line with her front leg and fired. She dropped right there. My 50 cal Thompson Center Impact got its first deer. I was using a 300 grain, 45 cal Hornady SST in a sabot and 90 grains of 777. The bullet hit right where I was aiming, She should be good eating as there are corn and soy bean fields all around the area.

Well done! We just closed out the rifle season with NO deer, so I am hopeful that I can get a chance at a deer during our upcoming muzzle loader season. I also have a T/C Impact, how do you find it groups at 100m?

Cheers
Jay

I am getting around 1.5" to 2" groups with the load listed. Just started playing with it this year so still more playing around with different bullets and powders but so far so good. I have found that 80 to 100 gr is usually the sweet spot with these style of rifles. Just because they can handle 150 gr doesn't mean they will be accurate. The receiving end will not know the difference of a couple hundred FPS. Bullet placement is everything.
