I was recently at a friends home reading a older guns and ammo and came across an ad from an outfit in Texas ( the name escapes me right now) who offered cylinder conversions for uberti, navy arms and others for 36 cal to 38 cartridge, 44 cal to 45 cartridge... Anyone know anyhting about this? Where available in Canada? thanks Greg

Both Kirst and R&D make conversions for cap and ball guns. They are available through a number of different vendors in the US. I don't know if anybody in Canada stocks them. I have used the R&D's in both '58 Remington Armies and Ruger Old Armies. They are a quality product and dropped right into the revolvers with no fitting.

I have a Cartridge adaptor for my Rogers and spencer Orignal cap and Ball.
There made of Arsenl grade steel so the cylinder can take a good load BUT them orignal guns frames are made from soft iron so ya cant hop up the loads to much.
If i was useing a modern Repo of a R&S then yes i would load it up some.

Tho the Orignal Rogers and Spencer has the Strongest frame of any of the old BP pistols.
I shoot 850 FPS 45 schofield loads outa mine but the gun is a like brand new gun outa the box from 1860
Mine shoots less than 2 inch groups at 25 yds no problem as my bore is mint to.
It was a bit of fitting to alter the adaptor cylinder to fit in the ORIGNAL R&S apartenly they pop right into the repos and most are 45 colt.

Pic of the Custom R&S with percussion cylinder installed.
This is still one of me favorite guns :D

Never mind I went online and just order from Kirst, thanks guys you've been very helpful!!! I don't suppose you have any advice on loads I have a Ubertti 1851 in 36 cal.

Some of the conversions are for 38 long colt, but a 38sp with a short overall length will work. I remember reading somewhere that hollow based bullets work best in the conversions.

I see that Kirst is 5-shot. Do the Cowboy Action rules allow you to load all 5 cylinders?

If I remember correctly they have a notch in the cylinder where you can safely drop the hammer between chambers. Kind of like capping all 6 and putting the hammer down between them. I think that type of set-up is ok for cowboy action.

The conversion for the Uberti '51 Navy is 38 Spl. The problem is that the bore on the gun is probably .375 (at least my '61 Navy is). I think unless you get the bore sleeved, the only bullets you can shoot are hollow-based wadcutters which will expand out enough to engage the rifling.

I'm still not sure you can use the notch between the chambers in a CAS match. My '58 Remmie conversion cylinder from R&D hold 6, so I just load 5 and don't worry about it.

36 ubertti

I'm pretty sure that the balls I'm shooting through my old girl are .357, I'm pouring my own so I'm not sure. Have you heard of any problems with brass frames on these not standing up???? Greg

The KIRST CONVERSIONS are not for brass framed guns, they seem to feel the frame is not strong enough. goto ww.riverjunction.com then goto the firearms section for more info.
