black powder slug round pressures?

Hey there,

Would any of you black-powder guys have an idea as to what kind of pressures/velocities would be generated with the following "round"?

A 12g brass shotgun hull loaded with 70gr of pyrodex and a 1oz .729cal slug seated on top?

I'm trying to figure out some black powder slug rounds for my SxS shotgun, with the goal of achieving decent velocities with low pressures. Thanks -Cameron
 
I would have to dig up my Lyman Black Powder Manual but the pressures should be the same as for a shot load of the same proportions. The standard 3 dram load of BP is 80 grains of 2F. There are 27 grains to a dram

Not at all sure about pyrodex....but you asked about black powder.....most 12 ga. loads of 3 drams including .715" round ball produce very low pressure..usually in the 5-6k range(L.U.P.)....that is for the 80gr. load mentioned above.A 3 dram load with Black Powder will produce around 1/2 the pressure of a 3dr. smokeless load. This the same as the 45/70 where a 1200fps. load w/B.P. will have lower pressure then a load with the same vel. using smokeless.

Thanks for everything so far. I guess what I'm getting at with this post is trying to find out what my "max load" would be. My shotgun is proofed for 12000psi give or take, so as long as the black powder charge doesn't exceed that, everything should be okay.

That being said, I don't know too much about black powder, other than my tinkering with a lyman flintlock a year or so ago. But all I took away from that were max charges, ie 120gr max, instead of what kind of pressures those loads were producing.
