Black Ventilated (slottled) M14 handgaurd

I was at a show today and picked up a couple black ventilated M14 handgaurds. One marked DT15 and the other marked DT26. The black colour appears to be impregnated into the fiberglass and not paint. I thought they were supposed to be brown and that only the "solid" un-ventilated early handgaurds were black Somebody please school me on these
