Hi guys ,
I dropped my new m14 and blackfeather stock plus a ton of new parts off at my gunsmith for assembly and getting the barrell cut crowned and threaded , unitizing , and to have it all gone through so I know it's safe , the problem is that it's been 6 months now ! When I dropped it off I was told it would be 4-6 weeks , so about 7-8 weeks go by and I give him a call to see how he's making out , tells me it's not done and will call when it's ready , so I wait another 2 months and call him , he says he's busy but will get to it soon as he has a project in the lathe , I then wait another month and call , he says call back in 2 weeks , so I do , he then says call back in a week , I call again and he sounds fairly annoyed that I'm calling him as he has so much work to do ,( he asked me to call ! ) I don't like being a pain in anyone ass but it's been 6 months and I've been polite on every call and even understanding . I'm not sure what I should do ? I've already got a ton of time in waiting invested in this guy and I can't do maching myself , I could do the assembly ( it would be a small challenge) I'm tempted just go go get it as I want to shoot it on my upcoming week off work , but then I'd have to find someone else and wait for them to do the work ...... I've almost lost interest in my new gun build wich is a real shame because I was so excited to start it .
Anyone have any good advice ? Thanks much Ernst

You are more patient with the runaround and brush off then I am that's for sure.
Never heard a bad thing about Gunco or Tacord.
Dlask should be able to do the work in less then 6 months.

Who've you been "dealing" with?

I don't want to name anyone just yet , I asked Dlask first but they only wanted to do the maching on the barrell and not the assembly , so I went with this guy who by all accounts does good work ......? I may have to call dlask back but I hope not .

The only smith I've used in Vancouver area is Barry.
He was slow, didn't do the work I had discussed with him in person, he made changes to "the plan" without contacting me and finished the job differently then we discussed.

The only good thing I can say about Barry is he had the sense to not charge me a dime when I picked up the gun in person...... I was pissed.

The quoted price for the original work we discussed was good and the timeline was acceptable, but things didn't work out for me.

I hate it when this happens , so unnecessary . I wish there were more gunsmiths available to the lower mainland , that way these guys wouldn't be so overwhelmed with there work load and might be a little more hungry for new work and clients .

Was he sick and then his wife was in the hospital and then he was on holidays and then he was semi-retiring & training a replacement and then a unicorn made off with all his spare parts? If so we all know who it is. The stories are legend.

Ha ha ha too funny ! Must have been the unicorn ! That's good I needed that . Lol

This is pretty typical for gunsmiths, they give you a time and take about 5 times as long, and seem frustrated to talk to you when you check why it isn't done.

There are a few good ones out there who do good work and also are on time, but it's hard to find out who isn't punctual because no one wants to share names.

Plus, this time of year everyone seems to need their hunting rigs fixed up asap.

if it were me, i'd go and get my parts back ! after blowing the 2nd time extension, that was too much ..... if he was at all serious, he shoulda called you and explained the delays

at least the parts would be safe with you

I couldn't agree more I called him to tell him this is it I'm done , and the first words out his mouth were " it's on the bench right now " so I told him I'm picking it up Monday regardless of how it looks or how many parts its in . So come Monday he's either got a happy customer that may do business again or a pissed off one that won't !

well...... at least it ain't me that's got yer rifle ;)
I'm kinda curious as to what gunsmith you sent her to as well.
I know that sometimes these rifles don't go together as planned with the parts a customer might supply.
I've been in that boat , trying to source parts that "will" work. with m1a parts it can be a pain to get anything fast, especially the high end or US made stuff. "generally" sourcing better parts (and most times not charging for them) was a major reason for delays on my bench.
I quit the m14 smithing for money and am just completing my last "on the house" build for another CGN'er
I wasn't aware of any lowermainland gunsmiths offering quality M14/M1A work other than dlask's barrel services and parts.

Hi guys , just wanted to let you know it is definitely not 45acpking , that is definitely not 45acpking that has my rifle , so please don't send him any emails . Thanks much for looking out for me though ! I'm hopefully picking it up completed on Monday , this is what I was told , wich is great news because I just bought a new scope from a fellow CGN'er off of the EE and I'm all excited again about my project ! I picked up a 4/16-50 viper pst and I'll be off to my local gun store for some new rings on Monday afternoon (hopefully), anyway this thread was just me venting and I appreciate you listening , and I will let you know if I get it on Monday completed or not . Ernst.

The whole..... I'm coming to get it.... Oh what do you know it's on my bench routine sounds familiar.
Hopefully he doesn't rush it at the end.

With some of the more in demand gunsmiths, 6 months is actually the norm. Even the last time I dropped something off with Casey, he said about 3 months, although it was less than that

As with anything, showing up in person is 10000x more effective than calling. It's easy to ignore a phone, definitely harder to ignore a person.

I used to be very "oh I hate to bug you", however, more often than not people take kindness for weakness, and you get shuffled to the bottom of the pile. If a deadline gets missed, there should be a VERY good reason why. If a second deadline gets missed, there should be recompense of some kind, and the work should get done "that day". I'm not saying there is anything wrong with a gunsmith that is busy (they must be good), but that should be disclosed up front... "next time I get something on the lathe" would have had me blowing a cork..."well put my gun in the lathe and then something will be in it!!!".
