hi fellow nutters, i'm thinking of getting a bisley in 45colt , with the intention to load it to 44mag equiv +/- . do any of you have any thoughts &/or exp with this?

I would sugest stronly that you do not try doing this as the 45 colt cartridge case will not take anywhere near the presures that the 44 mag case will.

The Bisley is my favorite BH as well, compare cyl. wall thickness, between the BH and the Super Blackhawk .44 mag. and reload accordingly.

Bisley 45 Colt

Nada,
+1 what Ben said
Google it.... do lots of reading and have fun.
Pressures should be less for similar velocities because of increased bore size.
check the cylinder throat diameter so that you are not swaging your bullets if you intend to use lead/alloy.
I have one cut to 5 1/2 inches nice.

It has nothing to do with the strength of the brass, it has to do with older .45 colt chambers being cut too large and consequently causing over-strtching of the brass. Modern .45 brass is no less strong than modern .44 Mag brass.

I love my .45 Bisley and am actively looking for a matching .44 - great guns for handling recoil and raising eyebrows. I'd love to find one of the Accu-Sport 5.5" stainless .45LC/ACP convertibles.

You need to read John Linebaugh's articles on the matter...

The loads listed for .45Colt do not come up to the same pressures as listed for .44Mag. There's a very good reason for this. Try to do so and you're likely to end up wearing parts of your newly destroyed revolver as jewelry.

Having said this there ARE Ruger only reload recipes for both .45Colt and .44Mag. But the .44Mag loads still have higher pressures. So if you want to load to such pressures then do so with .44Mag ammo for .44Mag guns only. Load to such pressure for a .45Colt gun and you are still risking having a pipe bomb go off in your hands.

Now I may be mis-reading a lot more into this than you intended. If so I apoligise. If you're just looking to obtain .44Mag like muzzle energy levels then fine. The accepted .45Colt higher Ruger Only loads will either come very close to or match the .44Mag energy levels. But DO stay within the safe pressure levels for the gun. A .45Colt will NOT survive the peak pressure levels found in the more serious Ruger Only .44Mag loadings.

Besides any of the SAFE Ruger only loadings will most certainly shorten your arms from the recoil. So there's no big need to load to anything more powerful.

If you find that Ruger Only loads in the .45Colt are not enough for you then I strongly suggest one of the Magnum Research BFR revolvers chambered in .45-70. These are guaranteed to launch you bodily backwards a good 10 yards from your point of firing a beast of this sort...:D

I hope you don't intend to test this at a range with other shooters near you. If you feel compelled to fill the .45 Colt case with powder use Goex FFFG.

First off, I highly recommend the .45 Colt Bisley Blackhawk, it is an excellent revolver. I've owned 3 ~ 7-1/2", 5-1/2" & 4-5/8". Circumstances forced me to sell 2, but I still have the 4-5/8"....

Ruger .45Colt chambers have cylinder walls @80% the thickness of the same gun in .44Mag. If you load .45 Colt to .44 Mag pressures, you will be holding a grenade.

If you want to do that, buy a .454 Casull, and use .454 brass.

.45 Colt should stay within the "Ruger only" data in most reloading books.

The joy of .45 Colt (in a large frame Ruger[Redhawk,"Old" Vaquero,New Model Blackhawk,Bisley Blackhawk]) is that you can launch bullets which are heavier than .44 Mag is capable of to a decent velocity (think 300grain to @900-1000+fps)

DO NOT TRY THIS IN ANY "flat-top" (new or old) or "New Vaquero" as they are Colt size (smaller) frames & cylinders.

many thanks . my intent is to load to std 44mag levels as a max, aka ruger only 45, 300 @ 1000 looks good to me. i've finely got shirts that fit so shortening my arms is not in the works. that FFFG looks pretty wild. thanks again!!

As was already stated the .45 Colt is 80% as strong as the .44, therefore you can load them to approx 80% of .44 Mag pressure...
