I may have a lead on a Blackhawk flattop first model .357 in pristine condition. Heard second hand it had very low round count but even at 71 the guy would have been too young to be first owner, but it is in orig box. How desirable a piece would this be if info turns out to be correct? Seems to me as first model it would be the mid sized frame? My feeling is it could be collectible, and not having some early improvements is not a negative.

I investigated a bit prior to buying a new Ruger Flattop from Prophet River a few weeks ago.

I had heard that these guns were sought after to convert to .44 special, as they were strong enough for the conversion, with little 'collector' value.

I collect guys to shoot, so I bought a new one - without the bother of finding a nice old .357 and getting into gunsmithing.

Thats what I know.

A "Guns + Prices" book I have, lists the Old model Flat Top as 1955-62 w/ 42,600 produced. So I would disagree about a man of 71 not being the org, owner. The listing for the 44mag version reads "similar in appearance to the 357 but slightly heavier frame". Not that, that helps with difference in frame question.

And with a 44mag model in the same years time frame, why would anybody want to convert to a 357 to 44 special?

Graydog - The listing for the flattop in 44mag in the 1959 is listed as Blackhawk
