Can you use triple 7 in a C&B revolver?Due to the scarcity of Black powder .Im not knowledgable in BP firearms ,Like most of us looking for Funs that are under Trudeaus radar for the time being.Picked up an original 1858 and want to fire it.So can I use Triple 7 FFFg in it?How many grains?Ect Its in 44 of course Also have a pocket in 31.Dave

I am not sure that I can answer your base question - I never tried Triple 7 in a cap and ball to know if it works or not. When I had a muzzle loader, was written in multiple places that the various substitutes were to replace true black powder VOLUME FOR VOLUME - not weight for weight. I do not know if normal percussion caps will adequately light up the substitute powders though - was a thing, I think, why shotgun primers were often used with in-line muzzle loaders - to get more ignition fire and heat to light up the load.

I've been shooting the subs since living in Berlin in the early '80s. First in a ASM 3rd Model Dragoon, then in a Rodgers & Spencer, and then in two percussion rifles. Pyrodex P for the pistols and Pyrodex RS and T7 for the rifles.

It's now just gone 4pm here in UK, and I finished cleaning up my Ruger Old Army [bought in 1986] from this morning's shooting session - again Pyrodex P. I shoot T7 in my .45-70 Govt.

Volume for volume os the way to go - the subs are less dense than the real thing - Pyrodex P by about 5% and T7 about 10%.

Best bet is to buy the Hodgdon manual that details ALL the loads you can use.

I have tried 777 in my Ruger with Remington #11 caps and found it worked well. I was using 3f with full loads and not having any problems. It was giving excellent accuracy at 25 and 50 m. I never. Tried it with lower loads but can’t see a problem.

A close friend uses Jim Shockey’s Gold in his Pedersoli Remington 1858 with success. I believes it gives him more time shooting vs cleaning. Seems to work

Yes I have triple seven pyrodex and blackhorn on hand I prefer triple seven keeping in mind it is slightly hotter. I do not shy away from it loaded by volume. just last week I used it in my 1855 root and remington new model army to great success a little cleaner as well. I also prefer it in cartridges.

Would not play with the substitutes at all. The upcoming show in Calgary next weekend will see black powder available at a reasonable price and as well should
be able to find some caps as well. Plan to attend!

I used Pryodex P in my 44 1862 after I ran out of 3F, as much as like to keep things old style I found 25grs. under a wad and a ball worked better than the holy black did
