This seems familiar - Not sure if it's the same guy but "Beyond the Danger Close" by Capt (Ret.) Hub Gray was rather desparaging of this or a similar gentleman. If i remember correctly as a witness himself along with a number of others the Vickers was retrieved in a lull with no fighting and the individual was part of a squad who retrieved it. Again if memory serves the 'gauntlet of fire' was a separate event where the individual ran with ammunition between two positions.
I'll have to dig out the book and check - it might be worth looking into for those who've met the person in question. ISBN #1-894255-24-0
