Was out shooting my 221 Fireball (CZ 527 rifle) a few days ago, testing some handloads with 50 gr bullet & H4198 powder. Id used this combo before, usually use F205 gold medal match primers. I was given a hundred Federal '200' primers which were stated on the box as being 'Small rifle primers & high velocity pistol' so I figured I would get rid of some

here is what my first shot did, I pulled the rest of my ammo. It chrony'd @ 3035 fps which is not unusual (or high pressure) for 18.5 grs H4198 & 50 gr bullet in my gun.

Whe you blow a primer does anything come back at your face?? Ive heard if you dont where glasses a blown primer could blow back debris and ruin your eyes.

Most guns are designed to handle theses kinds of gases and exaust them out the side and away from the shooter. (Just look at the vent holes in certain bolts and/or receivers)

I've blown quite a few primers in handguns, never noticed anything different 'til I checked the spent cases.

Previously, I too had always thought a blown primer was a catastrophic event.

Tod,

In several years of shooting, I haven't come across Fed 200 rifle and magnum pistol primers. I imagine these are a softer cup than the 205/205m. Maybe that's why you were given them. Was there 1 missing from the box? ;-)

PS I don't think Federal markets the 200's as small rifle primers anymore, probably because of what you experienced. Now they are called "small pistol magnum primers":)

yeah a bit cut the face, nothing too bad. All I got was a bit of smoke coming out of the action. Definitely woke me up!

Wow, someone thinks he is all knowing, Like he NEVER does anything wrong. Someone needs to give this one a HARD kick in the A**!
Before you git yer knickers all knotted up, you should know that GH and TB are "life partners".

For them it's for better or worse, and are always squabbling in the internet. We just got used to it after a time.

When the once a month "can I use pistol primers in my rifle because supplies are short and I'm a fearless inovator?" thread comes up again, just direct them to this picture. I wish I'd taken some pictures to do the same when the "Is primer cratering bad?" thread comes up again.

Weird looking hole in that primer, kind of a line, rather than the more "round" holes that I have seen. Any chance that might have been a defective primer?

Or is the pic deceptive?
