Just wondering if anyone had experience with these rifles for moose hunting?

The BLR is scoped and seems to destroy my shoulder. The 1894G (45-70) has iron sights and I shoot it well.

I'll be in the Williams Lake, BC area this year and I have never been hunting before. Just looking for some advice on rifle choice.

Thanks,

Scott.

Both shoot well. Even though 45/70 has more energy, .308 is still adequate for moose, and is cheaper to shoot and easier on the shoulder than 45/70 in my opinion. One of my regular hunting buddies owns and shoots a BLR in .308 and its a solid and reliable rifle. Without the extended recoil pad, I find it a bit short. What round do you use that blows apart your shoulder? 180gr are perfect for moose.

We shoot most of our moose at an average of 50 paces and one of us gets our tag every year.

Sounds like you shoot the .45-70 better, take it and adjust your hunting style accordingly. Not that the .308 BLR isn't capable. I just never could understand hunting with a rifle you're not comfortable with.

I've used both. I have taken a dozen or so moose with my BLR in 308 from 20yards to 300. The 45/70 is a new purchase and hasn't been used on a moose yet but it will be a 150 yard gun max and should do the job fine.

I don't understand how a 308, in any rifle, can destroy a shoulder, but the 45/70 is fine.

The new ammo from hornaby will do just fine out past 150 I can promise you that.

Scott Bear,

if you dont like to shoot the .308 BLR sell it there is a lot of fans around.

all the best.

ps : i ve shot both and it wasnt a confortable experience, maybe the fit of the stock ...

And Scott either cal works great up here I hunt with a 45/70 for (bear, deer, moose) and use my 257wby for the longer range stuff (wolf, coyote, some deer,Bear, moose, elk) mainly feild or rd shots. There's alot of thick bush up in the Williams lake and Quesnel area if you need a hand while your up here i'd be more then happy to help you.

I'd be willing to bet your BLR has the straight rear wood?
Just curious if the straight rear wood would interchange with the pistol
grip style?
If so, it might be worth the swap.
Or maybe try a decent slip on pad to give a bit more cushion.
There are reduced loads for the 308 which may help you along.

Thanks Thumper1. I just may take you up on it.

Yep, went to the range yesterday and the 45-70 was more of a push and the .308 more of a snap. Necked case vs. straight walled? I think I'll just have to practice more with the 45-70 and put an aperture sight or something on it.
