Just got a BLR 81 in .358 Win (steel receiver)
Should compliment my custom Parker/Hale 35 Whelen nicely.
Anyone have much experience with this gun/cartridge combo?
I am going to shoot 225 Nosler Partitions @ 2450fps. I groups about 1 1/4" for three shots at 100yds :sniper:

My 20" bbl'd Pre 81 BLR only gets 2300fps with the 225's, and 2400fps with 200's. (full load of Varget)

I've taken a black bear from a stand with the 225gr. Sierra, I broke the off side shoulder and the bullet exited.

I've taken one moose and 2 deer with 200gr. Hornady SP's one deer and the moose were neck shots, and the other deer was a 60yd boiler room shot, you could pretty much eat right up to the bullet holes.

I really dont think you need a bullet of the Partiton's make up in this caliber, but what do I know anyways.

good luck

I had one with the alloy receiver.

I shot 225 gr Barnes XLC's at just a touch over 2500 fps. Kicked like a mule!!

Shot a calf Moose with it at about 40 yards.

I ended up trading it as it was really finicky about ammo. Using factory ammo 200gr Silvertips it changed point of impact 8" straight to the left at 100 yds when I went to a new box. Never had that much change with handloads but enough to make me leary.

I bought it to be my Bear gun but never had the opportunity to harvest one with it.

I think if I ever get another it will be one with the steel receiver like yours as the extra weight would help tone the recoil down a bit and load it a little lighter.

Left ####'s comment about premium bullet's not being required is probably a good one considering the top velocities and I would probably go that route if I was to do it over again.

I think you will like the combo,

Enjoy.

Gun writer Layne Simpson once recommended 47/H4895 - 225 Partition - 2510fps - as his fav load for his Win88 lever in 358Win. Reduce and work up as this a max load for him. I plan to try it some day myself. 2450MV is probably more reasonable from your BLR I'm thinking.

I have the same steel receiver BLR/358 rifle as you. Iron sights are finicky not having enough elevation adjustment with factory bead to cover all bullet weights I use.

I am loading 49.5 grs. of IMR 4895 with the 225 gr. Nosler in the 358. 2470fps over the chronny 20" barrel.
My Whelen gets 2700 fps with a 225 Accubond & a full load of R15. It groups into an inch @ 200yds (no joke - Shillen match grade barrel)

What's to change - it's text book perfect! Ya got it goin on.

What do you think of the Hornady 200gr Spire point ? They should be great for deer and the odd moose or elk. Should be able to get 2600fps and it will be cheaper to shoot and save my Partitions for hunting. Any good powders n' loads ?
I also have -10 boxes of 250gr Speers - 1 box 250 Grand Slam - 6 boxes 225 Partitions - 6 boxes 250gr Partitions - 5 boxes 250 gr Hornady Spire & round nose

On the Hornady 200gr Spire point in the 358Win for deer,
For strictly deer hunting, my favorite bullet is the 200-grain Hornady Spire Point. It demonstrates perfect expansion on whitetails along with good penetration, and excellent accuracy. I have used this bullet for many years, first using it in an old Savage model 99. It is one of those bullets that has no gimmicks or fancy names, but just works very well, every time. Also good for whitetail hunting is the only factory load available at this time; the Winchester 200 grain Silvertip.
