What do you guys think about having a BLR re-chambered to .338 Fed?
It seems to me this would make a very nice combo for deer in heavy cover
And maybe even moose.
First would it even be possible? Being based on a .308 case I would guess it would be.
Second would it make sense from a cost perspective or should I hang on and maybe
Browning will chamber this round in the future? Finally if it is possible what do you
smart folks think it would cost to have this done?

Cheers
Allan

The barreling itself would pose no problem. The useable magazine length is 2.870".

I don't know how long factory .338 Federals are.... I think that would be the only problem if they are over 2.870".

As far as I know dennis, the 338 Fed (hate that name) is just the 308 necked up to 338. If this is indeed the case, it shouldn't pose any unsurmountable problems. You could re-barrel and chamber, or maybe, rebore the barrel (if there's enough meat there) and recut the neck/leade area of the chamber. I bet Browning chambers it shortly if it takes off at all though. - dan

The case is the same but some of the .338 bullets are quite long ... Winchester has always seated their factory .308 ammo fairly shor t... if Federal do the same with the .338 Federal, it won't be a problem.

Wouldn't it make sense to just buy a BLR in .358 Winchester? They are available on here used once in awhile or new. This is the same thing necked up to .35. It's a very nice round too. It would save the expense of rebarreling or reboring the .308 to .338. If you absolutely want one in .338 Federal, I suspect you will see factory Brownings in that chambering pretty soon.

From a "cost perspective", I think you be better off just buying a BLR in 358Win than doing all the gunsmith stuff.

.

Thanks guys. I agree. Save the expense and trouble and there is a fine example of a .358 BLR on EE.
On the other hand I have this old broken .243 BLR that someone gave me and I'd really like to do something with it. Decisions Decisions
