I am looking for a stainless takedown rifle to carry with me at work (in a helicopter). I prefer bolt rifles, but the cost of getting a takedown made has proved fairly prohibitive.

Does anyone know a 'smith in canada that will do a proper takedown bolt action conversion?

Enter the BLR stainless takedown. If I were to go this route I would like to have one in 35 whelen or possibly 35 sambar (WSM).

They make them in 358 win, 3006 and 300 WSM.

Would it be simpler to re-chamber/alter the action from a 358 to 35 whelen/35 sambar, or to have a 300 WSM/3006 rebored to 35?

Not sure if the BLR short actions receivers are different length or not.

I guess I could always just pull my head out of my arse and get the 450 marlin.

Or the BLR takedown 325 wsm? 200 gr bullet at close to 2900 ft/sec. I love mine
Or the Merkel Helix in 9.3x62. They are an easy takedown in the $2600ish range (from memory only) for the base synthetic model.

This is true. The rifle will spend most of its time on the mid/north coast rivers frequented by some of the biggest bears on earth. the 358 would probably also provide faster follow up shots, and isnt as much of an oddball as the 35 sambar.

Anyone know how hard it is to convert a BLR to a magnum bolt face (350 rem mag?/sambar)

Good point on the 325 WSM as well.

I load my 358 Winchester BLR stainless laminate takedown with 310gr Woodleigh RN bullets at 2100 fps MV and have downed Moose with it. It's an excellent penetrator with plenty of wallop.

How do you find ammo or even brass for reloading? I'm resizing 300 wsm at the moment, don't like having one headstamp and having another caliber...

Great bear hunting and great bear protection are two different things.
For short range big bear protection in inclement weather a BLR 81 lightweight stainless take-down in 450 Marlin.
If you don't hand load the Buffalo Bore ammo pushing a 430 grain hard-cast lead flat nosed bullet to 3500 ft-lbs ME is available in several stores.
For ordinary hunting the Hornady factory ammo pushing a 325 grain FTX bullet to 3400 ft-lbs ME is pretty deadly and accurate stuff.
I owned one of the blue steel models for a while and was very happy with it.
Someone made me a very good offer at a needy time and the rest is history.
No need to fork out big bucks for a custom gun.
