BLR red dot or scout

Thinking of getting a blr for my dad. Anyone have any experience mounting a red dot scope on one? I'm not even sure it is possible. What about a scout scope. Any insights are appreciated.

I owned a blr post 81 in .308 which I scoped up without troubles - you don't need a scout style scope for them. The only thing I didn't like was hammer clearance as I don't like having my scopes too high off receiver. I couldn't find a hammer extension that would work for the model had (maybe they do exist) - lots for pre 81 though.
