i bought a pound of blue dot to try in 38 special. i seem to get fairly good accuracy (around an inch at 15 yards) and nice feeling recoil. but... it fouls the crap out of my chambers and when i go to put another round in it sticks out about a half cm. loads were 6.2gr to 6.4gr behind a 158gr lswc. used in a model 10. anything i can do to keep the chambers clean? or should i just get rid of the powder?

Hi there..

I dont have any experience with blue dot powder but i a pound of it sitting in my reloading room. Was going to try it in my 9mm reloads.

I have been reloading for about 2 years now.. and have noticed that when shooting lead out of my .40 S&W Tanfoglio i get serious fouling due to the lube that i use on the lead bullets. However it has never caused a problem with chambering or feeding. But wow.. the feed ramp and the chamber and even the inside of the gun is filthy after shooting only about 120 rounds. I have been using IMR SR4756.. Which i like as a powder for good metering and very consistant loads.

I recently switched to Vihtavouri powder and was amazed at how much cleaner they are.. my gun is not as dirty after each practise session. Some powders are just dirty... nothing you can do about it but switch to a cleaner one..

I do like Vihtavuori powders for their clean burning properties.

I checked the VV website and they list the following powders for .38 special

N320
N340
N350
3N37

I do know you can get some of these powders from Hirsch Precision... Do a google search to get the website..

Book load for 158gr LSWC is 7.5 Blue Dot. You may be getting bad burn do to low pressure with light load. Try going up by .10 of a gr at a time till you get a clean burn, but don't go over the 7.5gr mark.

so ive decided to just try to sell the powder. bought some unique and bullseye today and worked up some loads. unique is amazing very acurate and feels like factory. :) bullseye is just as good but with little recoil. seems better in 45acp. very happy with these powders.
