Blueing salts

does it need to be 16-0-0 ?

would 46-0-0 , 42-0-0 or something similar work ?

from the little I've read 16-0-0 is pure sodium nitrate, they said 15-0-0 would also work, so I guess it has to be 15 or 16-0-0 to work in this recipie:

Formula "A"

3oz Sodium chloride

17oz Trisodium phosphate

5lb 1oz Sodium nitrate

3lb 1oz Caustic soda flakes

my impression is that 35-0-0 is what was / is used as an explosive. It is a white pellet and used to be used as fertilizer, perhaps still is.

Point is that 16-0-0 sounds like it must have a bunch of something else in it so prevent it being used as an explosive, presumably some sort of inert filler. I am not sure what effect that would have on using it for hot bluing. I am guessing you might require less potasium or sodium hydroxide in the formula above, in order to keep the ratios correct

35-0-0 is ammomium nitrate, 16-0-0 is sodium nitrate

check out the instant cold packs at your local drug store or Canadian tire. Ammoniun nitrate and a packet of water. Might take 4 or 5 boxes but it's one wat of getting nitrates.
Check you tube , you can add aluminum powder to it and have more fun.
