Brownells appears to be the only source. Oxynate No. 7 is what you want.

You can find some old gunsmith recipes online that use "commonly" available chemicals. I put that in quotes because some of them may not be as easy to get these days as they were back then. Brownells makes it simple with their packages, but they are proprietary to Brownells and tend to be expensive, but at least they are proven and provide very good instructions.

My uncle used to do some bluing on contract for Epps way back when and he had a recipe that he used. He showed it to me in a book he had one time, but I forgot to write it down. Going to have to call him and get it from him.

the last time we looked into bringing salts in from Brownells, a five gallon bucket would of cost 400.00 dollars for freght. Plus the cost of the salts. Don

I have a bunch of old gunsmithing books, found a bunch of recipes. But your totally right as well, most of those chemicals are now on the explosive act....not so easy to get.

There must be a way to get a good amount of bluing chemicals and pay $500 freight for a $50 dollar pail. Which as with 99/100 people thats out of the question.

Caustic Soda can be had anywhere that sells drilling mud for the oilfield. If you have any buddies that work rigs they could grab you a bag.

You can buy lye (caustic soda, NaOH) at the grocery store, but that's not The hard part. You also need some sort of nitrate. These are pretty tightly regulated as they can be used to make explosives. You can use ammonium nitrate fertilizer (watch for the fumes) or potassium nitrate (saltpeter, KNO3). Apparently most stump remover powders are 100% KNO3. This would probably be your best bet.
I'm lucky as I can usually "borrow" small amounts from work (science teacher).

you can find potassium nitrate in small bottles at drugstores
ask for saltpetter(most of them dont have a clue what is pottassium nitrate)

Wheres that Thread with the guy who used some kitchen stuff like draino to do hot blueing he was doing really good with some common found stuff?
Id like to find that again and copy it.

I can get ammonium nitrate easily, same with most chemicals. Through work as well.
