You can find some old gunsmith recipes online that use "commonly" available chemicals. I put that in quotes because some of them may not be as easy to get these days as they were back then. Brownells makes it simple with their packages, but they are proprietary to Brownells and tend to be expensive, but at least they are proven and provide very good instructions.
My uncle used to do some bluing on contract for Epps way back when and he had a recipe that he used. He showed it to me in a book he had one time, but I forgot to write it down. Going to have to call him and get it from him.
