Hey guys/girls.

I was considering importing a BM59 parts kit from the US of A.

My only question before I go ahead, is, are these firearms prohibited? They're more or less a rework of the Garand into 308, as far as I can tell....

Only thing is, that I've just, never seen one up here, or know of anyone who has one.

If anyone can help out, I'd appreciate it.

unfortunately yes- it's deemed a converted auto and therefore prohibited- you may be able to use the parts for something else but the receiver is prohibited

Apparently the receiver, (As well as other parts) is interchangeable with that of an M1 Garand. Or, at least, the site claims so.

Since it's apparently a converted auto... Can I bring a parts kit (no reciever) into the country? If I put it together using a Garand Reciever, what does it count as? A Semi BM59, or an M1 Garand in 308?

If you're interested in building a Garand in .308 - pick up a Garand receiver at SFRC or Tradeex, and get a Criterion .308 barrel from one of several Canadian sources (got mine from ZDragunov here on CGN) and the rest of the parts are identical to the 30-06 version...built mine last winter and it shoots great!

It was more along the lines of an interest in this, as a sort of... unusual item I've never seen before. Seeing as it seems to be a no-no up here... I may just move along and start in on my Not a M-14 build...

Ahh well, thanks for the info.

To make the BM-59 or M-14 style rifle with a detachable box magazine requires extensive machining of a Garand receiver. Extensive means expensive as are many of the other parts. Check out Shuffs Parkerizing in the US. He does these conversions professionally but can't do any work on receivers from Canada. I have asked and he said the BATF would shut him down in a heartbeat. http://shuffsparkerizing.com/services/mag-fed-garand/. Legalities? Not sure, all you have is a modified Garand but the powers that be may see it otherwise.

An original "military" issue BM-59 would be 12(3): converted auto prohibs
Beretta exported Civilian issue SA BM-59's in the 80's : these are 12(5) prohibs

another example of Canadian logic

Sarco has made garand receivers into bm59 type and there are real 5 round magazines for them. I had the mag
with a bm59 that I had a long time ago. I have a spare somewhere someone gave me after I sold rifle.

What about the BM62 ? Is this prohib as well, I could not find it on the ban list. Also anyone know if someone has built a mag fed Garand using a BM59 parts kit ?
