Fellow gunnut(and friend) DANTFORTH pointed out and article in the most recent Guns and Ammo. It had to do with BMB bullets (BIG MEPLAT BULLETS) from the Marlin lever 45/70 on the largest of African Game. The author points out how, in their testing, the big flat point had more effect than velocity and caused far more damage then say a .458Win. Mag. with a 500gr. RN at 2100fps. The key was the very large meplat and very hard cast nature of the bullet, resulting in little or no exp. and lots of penetration. Whether the RN in the .458 was SP or solid, it was not as effective as the BMB in the 45/70. These results are very similar to the testing M.T. Chambers did, as well as Mitchell(though he was also concerned about B.C.). His journal is a must read for anyone looking to get the most from their 45/70 or .458......In the same magazine is a fine article on loads for the .358 Win. including 250gr. bullets pushed to 2300+ fps. There is a thread in here somewhere asking about the .358 Win. loads.ie: Speer 250gr.,44 grs. of H-322,ww case,RP-9 1/2 primer, 2330fps.
