OK-before everybody jumps up and down-this is a BOAT GUN question-salt water.
I have an old .22 bolt action, worth about $50-maybe, and if the buyer was drunk. The question is-what ,if anything can be done to slow down the rust-I spray painted the barrel[the bluing was mostly gone anyway] and I figure I can always give it another shot of paint anyway.I can plug the barrel .I was just wondering about giving the stock[varnished] a coat of bedliner.Any other suggestions?Remember this isn't a collectable, its purely functional and the object is to keep the rust down-period

Do what Hemingway describes in "Islands in the Stream". Store the rifle in a rifle case with the interior well soaked in gun oil (he used fiend oil).

In Hemingways case his boat gun was a Manlicher Schoenauer carbine in 6.55 Manlicher which he said " ..was too good a rifle to keep on a boat but....".

I'd give my left nut for that rifle.

I'd personally put a epoxy based coat on both the stock and bare metal. Then, use the condom type muzzle protector.

plugging the barrel isn't a big deal[condom] but the reciever is more complicated to keep moisture out of.I like the idea of an epoxy based paint

Just curious, what doers one do with a "boat gun"???

I have seen guys who wanted to kill a big Halibut before bringing it into the boat, shoot it in the water. They used a stainless steel single shot .410 in a synthetic stock.

boat gun

hi there!

as a former commercial fisherman i've used a lot of boat guns. my personal favorites are the 22 mag and 22 hornet. I've had the best luck leaving a lightly oiled, think rem oil, empty in the chamber. keeps rust down on the extractors too. happy hunting

But what if you encounter a bear out on the water...this thread should be: what is the best boat gun for bear defense.

jk

I'd go with keeping the gun well oiled in a case with lots of dessicant packages.

I dunno....boats can be pretty damn tough.

I'd go with at least a .50 BMG, and aim for the waterline where I figured the engine room would be....
