I was at a gun aution the other day and a 12 ga bolt action shotgun hit the block. It was made in europe and had a mauser action. While I was thinking about it, the gun sold. What I was thinking was mating a rifled slug barrel to it and having a good bolt action 12 ga slug gun.

Anyone ever built such a rifle? I mean shot gun? I mean Slug gun?

Don't know why I would even be thinking about it cause I have a Rem. 1100 with a hastings slug barrel and a 2.5 bushnell scope on it. With Fed. sabots it has produced 2 3/4 inch groups at 100 yards and is a real handy bush deer gun.

The gun you saw was likely a Geha or Remo. Salvaged Mauser parts were used to make up inexpensive shotguns in the '20s. There have been dedicated bolt action shotguns made in recent times. Marlin, Savage and Browning have all made them.
Individuals have also converted bolt action shotguns into slug guns. May not give a fast second shot, but the idea is workable.

If I remember correctly those converted Mausers had their locking lugs removed. The handle is what held everything back-this made people rightfully nervous

Does anyone know if I am right?

The ones made in 20 ga. had lugs which could engage the receiver. Those in 12 ga. are locked by the third safety lug on the bottom of the '98 bolt. The bolt handle is not involved. Many commercial bolt action shotguns lock on the root of the bolt handle, so there isn't too much difference between one of the conversions and a typical ba shotgun, as far as number of lugs is concerned.
Whether a person wishes to shoot a Geha or Remo is a personal decision. They were proof tested, and given their age, have likely been shot over the years.
