Hi Fellers,

I'm fascinated with these...mainly because I just missed out on a Savage 340 at Epps selling for $199. After thinking about it...
(too long, obviously  ) I figured it may make a truly great "truck gun".

Anybody have one? What are your experiences with them?

Thanks, Jeff/1911.

Don't have one, but rumour has it that the .30-30 in a bolt action can give truly amazing accuracy. The 340 is the only one I've ever seen or heard about.

Remington 788s were made in .30-30. There are also some converted Swiss Schmidt Rubin rifles.

The 340 Savage was also produced under the CIL and Stevens names. My dad has one in 30-30 and he seems to like it, but I have never shot it. I think there was one of these on the equipment exchange in the last day or two. If not, Epps seems to get them in pretty frequently.

I had one in the CIL 830 (Savage 340) a few years back...it was a "minute of pickup truck" shooter at best, I don't know if that makes it a good "truck gun" or not?.......didn't feed worth a hoot either....

Jeff,...I just sent you an email

they make a great little hunting rifle, I could drive a 130gr bullet at almost 2500fps in my 340 easy to use and lite I don't know why they stopped making them

Had one of those before. Very accurate rifle. Best accuracy came with spitzer bullets but then they had to be load single shot as the ctg overall length was then too long for the magazine. But it was also accurate with factory .30-30 ammo with round or flatnosed bullets that fed from the magazine as well. Wish I never sold it... :(

I also had a Stevens 30-30 (340)
Shot better then 90% of the Model 94's I've owned and cycled reliably too:cool:
For Bouncing around under the Truck seat it was Great.
I also wish I'd kept that one...

The 340 is a great rifle, this is one I bedded into a Savage fiberglass stock

This is what it will do with factory Winchester 170gr Power Points at 100 yards

I have started load development for it and it will be interesting to see just how good it will shoot with handloads.

My "340" is a Stevens 325B bought for 150.00 from Epps. I needed to put in a new firing spring to give it some pep and replaced the front bead with a sourdough post.

This is truly an amazing rifle and shoots 125 Sierra Spitzers at 2400ft/sec into 1.5" groups which is as well as I can do with open sights. It also loads empty cases from clip to chamber without a hitch. Try that one some day and see how many rifles will do it.

It has turned into my wifes caribou rifle and though I planned on spitzer bullet use I am really liking the performance of 170 Silvertips loaded by Winchester.

I have learned a new appreciation for the 30-30 and have really enjoyed this rifle which outshoots a lot of much more expensive rifles!

Thank you for your comments fellows...:)

I just bought a Savage 340 from the Exchange forum here - so once I get it and have a chance to try it out I'll post back with my findings.

Jeff.

Well, I received my Savage 340 in .30-30 today. I bought awhile ago from another board member. :)

I really like this rifle, it's got quite a short barrel, good open sights and a decent trigger. I'm looking forward to trying it out...once I do I'll post a picture of some targets.

Jeff.

Sorry Ted, I just had to.

I had Rob's rifle in mind when I saw this thread and wanted to add my humble opinion.:)
I don't know if these ones could be loaded much hotter than a Win 94 but they sure are nice.

Don't you think it would make a swell squirel gun Ted?

Noel

It would make a sweet anything gun. One of the biggest moose taken up here a while back was a monster 83" bull that a fellow put down with two shots in the lungs at around 150 yards

...........with factory 170 gr in a Marlin 30-30!
