Since i have crates of this ammo, i starting thinking that in a long term survival situation my last rounds would likely be the mil surp of this caliber. Hunting game would be needed, so i would like to have a somewhat accurate hunting rifle in this caliber. I would like to have one in the safe at least. I have read up on a few including a Remington 779, CZ 527, Norinco JW-103, and an Enfield. I would like to know if there are any others that are common in Canada for a reasonable price and are a decent firearm.

Ruger M77, either the one of the limited run stainless canoe paddle ones or one of the current compact models would be my choice.

I owned a Ruger M77 Compact in 7.62X39 for awhile...it was an excellent rifle. This is how mine shot at 100 yards w/ Partisan factory loads.

I have a CZ Carbine, two Mausers and one Rem 700 I built into 7.62x39. The better the barrel and chamber the better the grouping.

The factory CZ shoots Czech surplus into 3-4" groups @ 100 meters nicely. Hunting ammo inside 1" too. The Rem 700 cuts the groups in half with both.
One of those Mausers could get sold if somebody wants one. They shoot as good as the CZ at half the price.

7.62x39

I have a 7.62x39 Ruger 77 boat paddle which I recommend. It will shoot 2.5 -3.0" with Norinco softpoints, slightly better with Norinco hardpoints and .75" with handloads at 100 yards, all with scope from a rest. The rifle is stainless, the ammo is marked non corrosive, but I still clean after every infrequent range session.

I have been leaning towards the Norinco because of the price but im not sure about the durability yet. It would be nice to handle one.

I see Savage is offering 2 guns, one on the scout scope plarform and one with acustock and plain 22" barrel blued ,I believe model 14FCN? My friend has an inquiry about pricing and availibility. Go look on the Savage web sight, cheers Dale Z!

The savage scout looks like the rifle i would choose if wanted to spend 800-900. If i choose a rifle in this price range it may be a year until i can add it to the safe. Right now i have a cz 858 and an STI spartan confirmed on my spend list next and something bolt action in .243. A good collection sure takes a long time to build.

I looked into this last summer and went for the Baikal single shot for 200 over the Norinco. Read and heard too many bad things about the Norc. The Baikal is a great small rifle and the price couldn't be beat.

I've got a Rem799 and I really like it. Feels good, shoots well. Nice and short and has become my brush gun. I am probably going to get another one in .22-250 for coyotes.

Just ordered a CZ 527 Carbine for my Nephews 12th birthday coming this April, I showed him the Ruger,Savage and CZ, after some thought he chose the CZ due to it having nice open sights and a removable magazine with nice walnut! I think that was the kicker, the kid sure has taste! I thought this would be the ideal first centre fire rifle, as he can practice all summer with surplus and use factory for deer till he grows into the Winchester model 70 that I put away for him when he turns eighteen.Dale Z in T-Bay

The CZ 527 7.62x39 has become my wife's favourite gun now. I bought it for me, but lost it to her. ;)
Said she got tired of lugging around standard size hunting guns and prefers the light, compact CZ carbine. Can't blame her at 120lbs, 5'3". She finally found a gun that suits her stature.
With Czech surplus she was banging the 6" gong at @ 100meters, shooting standing for an hour without missing until she got tired. I'm positive the deer and coyotes will drop in her sights.
