Hey everyone,

I'm thinking of buying my first shotgun on Friday. I'm a sucker for oddball and old firearms, so I've got my eye on one of the following Mossbergs:

  • 185D-B (20 gauge)
  • 195 (12 gauge)
  • 58 (12 gauge)

They're all bolt action, which is why I'm planning to buy one. What are the pros/cons to owning a bolt action shotgun? Is there anything I have to be worried about?

Just to be clear. You are looking for your first shotgun and you want bolt action, correct? What are your plans with this gun?

I have the 195KA. It's a great gun and I have been using it for years. It has been in the family since it was new. The only downside compared to a newer one is the weight and not being able to shoot steel shot. The C-lect choke is nice in that you have 3 on the gun all the time. Once you get used to it, you can shoot off 3 rounds pretty quick.

I think bolt action shotguns are pretty neat. not quite as fast as a pump but faster than a single and have an extra round over a double, plus you can remove/insert the magazine fast when hunting

That's a gorgeous picture! And thanks for the heads up. Now I want it even more!

One thing to watch is the detach mags. If you lose or break it, they are very hard to come by...

Why can't you shoot steel through it? It's a poly choke open it past full and you could shoot steel all day long.

We just got a 195 12 Ga. The bolt is crappy and poorly machined, the furthest thing from smooth I've ever felt. The box mag is sticky as hell going in and out. And the choke is only tight at the full setting, think I need to put a tapered mandrel down the choke to force it back open so the outer sleeve doesn't rotate without even touching it.

And the sights are not adjustable so shooting slugs could either been close or very far off from point of aim.

I found a notice from Mossberg, on their website I think, that said not to use steel shot in that gun along with all the other older models. I only use lead shot in mine anyways, so if you can use stell then have at it. The bolt on mine runs very smooth, better than some bolts on new guns that I have seen. Sounds to me like you got one that has been abused badly over the years. I've only fired a couple of slugs through mine and it is fairly accurate inside 30 yards, the only distance I'd use slugs with that gun at..

Seems like you are pretty much decided on one. Epps may have what you're looking for in the used section.

That's exactly who I bought it from. I was so excited about buying it that I totally forgot my SKS adjustment tool I was going to buy. :HR:

It actually fits me really well, and it's the first shotgun that I've raised to my shoulder and been comfortable with right away. It just needs a brass wool cleaning and I'm off to the races!

and i thought my father and grandfather were the only people that owned bolt action mossberg shotguns!!!! and yes they can be unloaded on ducks pretty quick, surpriseingly i guess years of use shows.

Had a great time a while back testing out a friend's Marlin Model 55, 12 gauge bolt shotgun, 36'' barrel with full choke and box mag held two shells. He has two examples the older one was his dad's purchased in the 50's and my buddy purchased his in the 70's. His dad's old 55 stays in the case. Meanwhile we have given the newer 55 a couple good workouts putting 3in mag shells through it. He tells me the 55 was actually called "The Marlin Goose gun." Felt lighter than it looks but it was a bit weighty. He tells me he and his dad use to fill the freezer full of geese every year since he was a kid. This year I'm going with him and I'm gonna see the old goose gun in action!:D
