Bolt disassembly, how often?

Hey eveyone.

I do alot of shooting but in dry conditions. Probably average 200 rounds per gun a year. I have 3 model 700's and a model 7. How often should I be disassembling the bolt and cleaning the firing pin assembly?

I have 9 model 700s....... I take all of my bolts apart every year (usually after hunting season) to clean, inspect, etc.

Just FYI I have been called OCD, Anal and waaaaay too bored.......

I have been informed that this was a good thing, there are a few things in there that should be greased, and it's always good to make sure that you didn't get fine particals in the bolt body that may effect function.

Lets face it, it takes 2 min......... Why not take it apart & clean it?

I have a Sinclair M-700 bolt stripping tool, so I strip and clean my bolts with every cleaning. There's no down side, and to me it makes no sense to put cleaning off until there is a problem; as I generally find that problems occur at inconvenient times.

The only firearms I worry about cleaning the bolt on a regular basis are my SKS (corrosive ammo), Ruger 10/22 (dirty bulk .22lr) and my Swiss Arms (because it sucks to have an FTF during a Service Rifle match). I'd even go as far to say that this is largely unnecessary unless you're putting thousands of rounds through them each year.

Although, I might be tempted to throw the bolt into a tub of varsol, let it soak for 24 hours and then give it a light scrubbing with an old toothbrush, then oil it as needed. I might do this once a year.
 
i seen a guy boil his bolts lighty inj a pot on the stove more of a simmer i guess but the dirt sure came out of that bolt i could not believe how much came out DUTCH
 
Not very often if I'm only shooting premium loads for hunting, maybe every few years. More often if I'm shooting matches. And regularly if I'm using corrosive or military ammo.
 
I actually like to tinker with my guns and I enjoy cleaning them while watching TV. I find one of the best ways to really get to know your gun is to detail clean it on occasion. By taking it all apart and cleaning things like the bolt or trigger groups you are educating yourself on the guns inner workings.. Of course I have run into trouble taking to much apart and not being sure how to put it all back together...BUT I always figure it out eventually,,..somtimes with help from others..but then I know haw it is done for future reference.
 
At 200 rounds a year, you might well get away with cleaning the bore, let alone the bolt, only once a year before you see accuracy start to drop off.

Once a year to strip and clean the bolt whether it needs it or not is probably fine and not too much effort.
