I am thinking on building a 7.62x39 walking around rifle with a .308" bore to shoot up some of that surplus cheap ammo. I don't think the oversize bullet will give issues. But does anyone know if the standard .308 size bolt face of a short action Rem700 or Ruger, Winchester, and so on, would work? Anyone tried it? I know it's a little smaller.
Thanks,
Rob

Mauser style claw extractors work well enough in this conversion, like my Winchester M70 pre 64 .308 will cycle 7.62x39 dummies (just checked). I'd bet a Rem 700 would have a much harder time due to the extractor design. Ruger should be the same as my M70. There is a fair difference in case head diameter size between the 7.62x51/.308 (.473") and 7.62x39 (.441"), so tuning a mauser style claw is a good idea, it should be able to be turned in a hair.

I bought a 7.62x39 mag conversion for the M98 that I put a 7.62x39 barrel on. The standard bolt feed and extracted fine but ejection was hit and miss. I think I got the mag kit from Numrich. Due to the ejection issue I later replaced the mag kit with a single shot feed shoot think that worked fine.

on a mauser you need to order a blank extractor and grind it to work with the smaller cartridge
I'm building one on a mauser 95 action as we speak but still need the feed kit
