Took my Stevens 77A to the range yesterday loaded it up with 5 rounds, shot four flawlessly, and upon loading the fifth, the bolt refused to budge. It seems that the bolt release button is stuck and preventing the bolt from unlocking and loading a new round. I have watched the tear dowon and reassembly videos on YouTube several times and I feel confident in taking it apart, but not sure what part(s) that need to be replaced or if this is something that can be fixed with a cleaning and reassembly. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I'm not entirely clear on the malfunction.

If the action is not unlocking after firing, then check the "Slide Lock Spring". When the hammer rotates forward it engages the Slide Lock Spring which pulls the "Slide Lock" down to unlock the action.

Before making changes, study the interaction of these parts to get a clear idea of how they function as a unit.

I did take it apart and when the trigger group is out of the gun, the slide lock operates as normal. When reassembling the gun the release appears to be very "sloppy" (it appears to be loose enough so that it does not engage the release. I am wondering if there should be something that holds the lever to the pin on which it sits to keep it in place. I guess I will YouTube it again to see what I am missing.

It's been some time since I've had one apart, but IIRC the Slide Lock Release is held in place by the receiver. Of course it does have it's pivot.

It appears as though the slide release tab is worn to the point that it will not push the slide release lock, thus not releasing the slide. So I think I may need to find some parts. *sigh*. I really like this gun too, hopefully it won't be too hard to find parts.

Doesn't look to be damaged and really doesnt look that worn. I played around with it a bit and if you manually push down the release, when the butt stock is off it works fine. Whenever I try to install the trigger group, the lever just won't unlock the mechanism and the bolt stays locked in place. Is there a problem with the way I am reassembling it? It's bugging me a little bit because the first time I took it out after purchase it worked flawlessly, as it did with the first four rounds in the magazine yesterday.

Fixed it! Thanks for the suggestion Lodi. The spring that actuates the release needs to be seated between the pin that holds the hammer and a pin on the side of the release itself. This is the connection between the hammer and the release you talked about. Seems to work like a charm now. Just have to oil and reassemble and it should b good to go.
