Not sure if this is the right section but here goes. I bought a remington xr-100 a few weeks ago from a friend. The rifle has seen maybe 300 rounds. I know this has done it since new. About 70% of the time when loading a round the bolt will go foward nice and easy, but when bringing the bolt down it will be tough, far from smooth. Never knew what was causing it, just that it was a pain. Well I gave it a good cleaning last weekend and noticed brass slivers. Alot of them. Finally figured out the on most rounds the extractor is taking a small sliver out of the casing. Well I believe it is called the extractor. It is the small piece that grabs the lip of the shell and holds onto it when ejecting the round.

Now I am pretty sure this is not normal. Is there a fix without having to file or machine it down? Any advise or help is appriecated.

scrapping

Factory ammo or reloads?

The tight closing sounds like headspace.

I would lap the bolt before I would consider machining if this is happening with factory ammo

We were just having the same issue with an older Tikka 22-250 tonite. Try greasing the lugs and if that doesn't work try lapping the lugs with 400 grit lapping compound.

I was thinking of trying a touch of grease or going a little heavier on the oil on the bolt. It is a .223 with factory loads. Doesnt seem to matter which of the 3 brands. I am taking it out this weekend so I will try the easiest thing first which is lube. No pics. When looking at it, it is pretty hard to see the markings so I dont think they would show up on the camera. The shavings are only maybe 0.020" by 1/4".

Bolt lugs need grease. Also bolt handle where it meets the bolt body, this is your primary extraction. The next thing to check might be the bedding screw length. If the screws are just a tad too long this forces the bolt up when you close it, causing the bolt to bind slightly.

"...this is not normal..." Yeah it is. It's not unusual for a new extractor to shave a bit of brass. New cars do the same thing. There may be a bit of grit around the extractor that's causing it not to open as well as it should. Give the bolt a good cleaning.

Bolt has been cleaned and cleaned again. I thought maybe it was just dirty at first and that is when I figured out about the shavings. I was also thinking about break in but figured it should be getting better by now. I guess I will see how it goes this weekend.

Just curious, you feed "FACTORY" rounds into the chamber and it is hard to close the bolt. How does it extract, hard, easy?

The extration as awesome. No mag and a large chamber so to keep the casing from flying I pull the bolt open slowly and grab it with my left hand. If I dont it will fly. Nice and smooth though.

This gives me an idea though. Once I get the bolt in the latched position, I can bring it back up and it will go into the latch position easily again. I am going to add a little more oil into the chamber and see if maybe the round isnt turning??? I will try this right away and post back.

Well........put more oil into the chamber than I normally like to and it seems to have helped big time. Going to the range tomorrow so I will see how it is then.
