On the suggestion of a friend I picked up a book called Water Dog. I have finished the book and have started with the basics on my Lab pup.

Anyone here read the book and applied the teachings to their dogs?

I read Game Dog by the same author. I was and am not a thorough trainer but my Lab will do what I need of her. I am sure if I applied more from the book I would have an excellent dog.

Richard Wolters "Water Dog" kinda took over as "the" handbook of retriever training from the predecessor "Training Your Retriever" by James Lamb Free.
Still in print many years after Wolter's passing.

Literally thousands of waterfowlers have used "Water Dog" as the basis for their retriever training program.

It's a good book for a backyard trainer that wants his lab to hunt, and be a house pet. I don't think it is detailed or in depth enough to train for hunt tests etc.

I think it is a very good book for someone who is new to training and wants a "huntin" dog.

I used James Lamb Free,s book on my first Lab over20 years ago and trained the rest up to present. I think my first Lab,bobo, trained me also. The secret with a pup is to "train" 10 minutes a day at the begining so its still "fun" for the pup. as it gets older you can intensify the training. All my dogs(3) will do triple retrieves and have soft mouths. And the all are "house"dogs as well. Good luck and have FUN!! JITC

Believe it or not i used a video made by Rose Cherry (Yes Don's wife) and adapted the hand signal/voice command to hunting for my Springer, which was really needed as he grew deaf in the latter years.

I used the same book for my dog on the advice of the breeder that i got him from. Both of his parents were trial dogs and his father won several titles and the breeder based everything from that book. My dog turned out to be a great hunter and a great family pet. ;)
