It isn't terribly fancy, it isn't terribly ###y and it isn't terribly evil looking...but it's mine! And as of tonight, after many months of piecing it together, it's done...for now. Some pics of my new shorty (fresh oil causing the blotchiness):

I'm happy to report the bulk of the stuff came from CGNers or sponsors. Here's the breakdown:

* Armalite/Eagle Arms stripped lower from Wolverine (CGN sponsor - shipped from MB on Monday afternoon, in my hands in NS on Wednesday!)
* Cerro Forge A3 upper from willwagspal (CGN)
* Wilson 14.5", 1:9 barrel, complete, from willwagspal (CGN)
* 2 position collapsable butt with pad from BabySeal (CGN)
* Bushmaster bolt, carrier and charging handle from thecrow (CGN)
* Delta ring assembly, handguards and castle nut from smgcon (CGN)
* DPMS LPK from Brownells
* Generic detachable carry handle from JSE Surplus

I put the lower together tonight following the instructions on AR15.com. Pretty straightforward but the springs gave me some mild grief. I was going for the C8 look and at this point, I just want to shoot the hell out of her before I start thinking about optics or starting another build (though I will admit that I have done some rough planning for a C7A1 look-alike).

The raw cost of parts was just under $975. Shipping, taxes, duty, etc added another $135 so I'm into it for a hair over $1100. Well worth the learning experience and even more pleased to have done business with so many good folks here on CGN (thanks for some good deals and especially, advice).

Can't wait for the weekend so I can get it to the range! BOOYAH!

Congrats... hardest part is the pin for the bolt release, Forward Assist, followed by the trigger guard... after that you start to feel like "Yeah! All right!!" as you slowly piece it together ;)

Now head out and see if it goes "bang" or "click". :D

Hahaha! When my buddy brought out his homemade 11.5" AR, we all took cover behind a wall at the range for his first couple shots...

Your smarter than I am....I just loaded it and let fly my first trip after the build. The thought of it blowing up didn't occur to me at all. Luck was with me that day obviously.

Great job J-man! Looks good and you sure did well to build it for that price. Mine (w/ 11.5" barrel) cost about $1300 when the smoke cleared. Get to the range and put a grin on your face...

Thanks boys. Just got back from the range and am pretty happy. It's pouring here and despite getting drenched, I managed to get off about 80 rounds before determining I had enough. No booms when I was expecting clicks and no clicks when I was expecting booms. Sure could have used some of those 10 round mags though.

I'm still not happy with my groups and will have to spend some time adjusting the sights correctly. Frankly, with the wind blowing and rain coming down, I wasn't in much of a mood to hump back and forth between the targets and firing point. Maybe Monday if it's drier.

Curious though if accuracy improves as a new barrel 'breaks in'. Is there a certain point when a new barrel is becomes accurate or is it at it's best when it's fresh from the factory? Is such a thing possible?

Great looking rifle j-man. All you need now is to shoot service rifle with it..nothing like 500 meters to ring her out.

Very nice - it becomes addictive. I could build uppers most days of the week for next to free if we had the market up here. Complete builds are more fun at that!!

Very nice !
I have been thinking about doing an AR build for a while and your project has convinced me to go for it. The sense of satisfaction from doing it yourself will be a little bonus every time you pull the trigger. Let the parts hunt begin!
