Bore Cleaner

This stuff?

It works as well as anything else. Cleans copper out fairly well. But being water based scares me a bit. Instructions say to use a good quality corrosion preventer after use. I wouldn't store a rifle after cleaning.

I use it when I am shooting lots. Otherwise I use Butches.

I've never used this stuff before...but I don't think it's worth overthinking. Many solvents work for this purpose, I'm sure this stuff does too.

As long as it doesn't have any abrasives or chemicals that are incompatible with the material of the barrel.

Light Synthetic Motor Oil
Mineral Spirits
ATF
Kerosene

A liter of each mixed together, will clean and lubricate for a long time, cheap.

If you replace that motor oil with Acetone, you will have the original Ed's Red - he also published about an alternative that did not use Acetone - just equal parts Mineral Spirits (VARSOL), ATF and Kerosene. I have a liter of each version here that I have been using for a year or so.

From using the stuff in my shop to clean up, I would be concerned that the mineral spirits / varsol just breaks down the motor oil and you would get about no benefit from that?? But I do not know how the chemistry of that mix would work together - it works for the task, or it doesn't.

You are correct - is "cheap" and I use it liberally. But does not seem to dissolve copper, lead or do much to hard carbon deposits - can see not much happens under a bore scope - pretty much can see the copper go away with proper copper solvent, lead go away with abrasive and carbon go away with proper carbon dissolver - I do not know about any practical "lead dissolver" - like from rimfire bullet residue. Is different to try to clean up seriously fouled 100 year old .22 boys rifle, versus cleaning up a bore after a day at the range. If it does anything, I think that juice might creep under copper, lead and carbon and make it let go of the barrel steel - so the brush can sweep it out - but that means at least overnight soak - I have bungs that I put on barrel muzzles - hold them vertical and fill the bore with Ed's Red and let it go at least overnight - I have been known to forget about them, and sometimes goes two over-nights. My best guess is that regular use after a day's shooting likely keeps that crap build-up at bay.

Definately a great product. Nothing to worry about it being a water based product. Just dry barrel and chamber along with lug area add a thin coat of oil and all good to go. I switched from petroleum based to water because of the smell in the house and I would rather get water/soap based solvent on my hands versus petroleum.

More and more shooters in the US BR circles starting to buy and use it.

I do use Bore Tech C4 as well along with the First Choice. I brush with the C4, and also leave a wet patch stuck in the chamber where the carbon ring would normally form. Helps keep things in check.

Mercury will take the lead out easily enough, but is not easy to find anymore, and you have to be very careful with it. - dan

FROM Your WEB SITE!

Bullet Central teamed up with Iosso Products to develop a breakthrough bore-cleaning product. ThorroClean Bore Cleaning System provides a quick and thorough cleaning of the rifle bore. It completely removes copper and carbon fouling quickly, without any wait time and difficult cleanup. The active ingredients are gentle on a barrel and should be used in the same cycle as you would your regular cleaning regimen. Included: ThorroClean Bore Cleaner ThorroClean Bore Flush Description You can develop your own cleaning method but we know that the following works. You should have a well designed and made bore guide. It also helps the cleaning process if you have a solvent port as it is easier to administer ThorroClean.

Step 1 Push a wet tight patch through your bore to push the excess of carbon lying in the barrel. This gets rid of the loose fouling in the barrel.

Step 2 Liberally introduce some ThorroClean (about a teaspoon full) to a good bore brush. Stroke the barrel forward out through the crown and back about 10 to 15 times. Check to see if you have enough ThoroClean on your brush.

Step 3 Push a dry patch through the barrel and follow that up with patches liberally doused in ThorroFlush. You should be able to clean all the ThorroClean out of the barrel with 2 or 3 patches. Make sure that you do not have excess ThorroClean in your solvent port Check it out with your borescope.
