hey newbie here with a quick question, im mounting a bushnell 3200 on my sl8, gun store wants to charge me 35 buck to bore sight it. Is it entirely necessary? seems like a bit of a cash grab? input??
Thanks

Spend the $35 on ammo. Start close up, with a large piece of cardboard, and slowly work your way further out. Don't get yourself into a situation where you are not sure if the bullets are even hitting the paper.

if you are heading to the rifle range you can manually bore sight it there the "olde fashione waye" so long as you can see down the bore - depends on what action it is. Can't do it well with a semi-auto or lever but bolt or break action should be able to be done.

Find a rock/object thru the bore at 100+ yards and then keep it steady on the rock using your rest/bags, etc - then adjust your scope to align to the rock. Bore sighted.

Now, time to do finer adjustments. Fire a shot or two at 25 yards and adjust to dead-on. Then do the same process at 100. Should be good to go.

For me, that is BS....I do it one of two ways with a new scope, if I can look through the bore, I simply set rifle up solidly on the rest and rear bag, centre my 100 yd. target in the bore(this is exactly the same as a peep sight), then move the cross hairs to centre of bull. If can't look through bore, I just use a very big sheet of paper at 25 yds or so , and get scope on at that range and it should be on the paper at 100 yds.

I didn't see the previous post and ours are pretty much the same!!!

I think this SL8 is an autoloader, and looking through the bore not possible? That's why I just suggested the large piece of paper / cardboard.

above info is good - thats what I do with my bolt guns

Another method is to put a target (I like a skeet bird) on the side of the berm at 100 yards and if the bern is sand, take a shot. Your buddy can watch for the sand flying and that gives you a good idea where you are

I just use my bore sighter... ;)

x2

Take the $35 and put it towards a bore sighter.

Odds are it won't be the first gun or scope combo you try and ammo is expensive.

I bought some bushnell thing that uses a magnet to stick to the end of the barrel - always has me on paper at 100. One of the better tools I've ever bought.

When I tossed my newest scope on my rifle I did the through the bore and line the scope up thing at 30ish yards, impact was 1/2"ish to the right. Dialed in 5 clicks left and went to 100 and finished dialing it in with 3 or4 more shots...DONE

you can sight in very quickly with this method:

set up a target at 25 yds (use a large piece of cardboard or paper.. at least 24" x 24")... and draw a 1" dot in the center..

set your rifle up on some sturdy sandbags or better yet some kind of rifle vise..

aim the cross hairs on the dot and fire one shot..

after the recoil settles, put he cross hairs back on the dot..

being very careful not to move the rifle.. look thru the scope, and have someone adjust the windage and elevation until the cross hairs are on top of the hole you just shot.. (if you have a vise type of stand, you can do it by yourself)

your rifle is now sighted in for 25yds.. this will put you on paper at 100 yds and all you have to do is fire a 3 shot group for fine tuning..

this method works best with some kind of vise, but i have done it myself plenty of times on semi-auto rifles that cant be bore sighted..

this will save you some ammo and leave you with extra for plinkin'

Ya buy the bore sighter. I only paid 60 bucks for mine and i have used it on 5 rifles and my buddies have used it and so on. Its paid for it self over and over again and again. I got the bushnell one too that sticks to the end of the barrel.

If you decide to use a boresighter, still take the time to check your shot at a close distance(25yd). Boresighters are a rough measure at best and do not take into account behaviour characteristics between bullet and barrel. Get into the parctice of first sighting in at 25yd or even closer if you have to and save the cost of a boresighter for ammunition.

I think this SL8 is an autoloader, and looking through the bore not possible?

You can use a laser designator or optical collimator type to bore site any gun. I'm not partial to them.

That's why I just suggested the large piece of paper / cardboard.

The advantage of this technique is that you never forget to pull the bore sight out of the barrel before shooting groups to confirm zero.

I bought a $65 bore sighter and it works very well. I am surprized they would try to rip you off like that unless you didn't purchase the gun and/or scope from them. Certainly, in my business, if someone walks in with my competitor's products and asks me to "help" make it work, I will hammer them with the price. If they even bought a small part of the equasion from me, I help them for very little or even free. Bore sighting with a laser takes 3 minutes.
