looking at the browning bar and it comes with optional boss. not familar with this? can anybody identify them for me. thanks

It's a muzzle brake, in my limited experience the most obnoxious known to man. It reduces recoil but I wold refuse to fire a BOSS equipped rifle without hearing protection, even while hunting.

It is also designed to allow you to tune the vibrations of the individual barrel to increase accuracy. If you don't handload, this is perhaps a desirable feature.

Also, in fairness, the BOSS has an optional replacement part that replaces the muzzle brake ports with a solid piece. This of course negates the recoil reduction and reduces muzzle blast to that of a conventional barrel.

A few years ago the BOSS was in style for a while but seems to have faded away from what I have noticed.

Personally, I have no interest in it. It is perhaps 3" long, and if I am going to carry a barrel that long it will consist of BARREL, which increases velocity. With the BOSS Browning has to reduce the barrel length to maintain similar overall lengths.

I have the BOSS on a Winchester Model 70 (Winchester and Browning are owned by the same parent company)

It is without question the most accurate rifle I have ever owned as it will repeat ably print 1" 3 shot groups at 200 yards. I do hand load and find it simple to work up to maximum velocities and then tune the BOSS for accuracy. Like RickF mentioned NEVER shoot it without hearing protection if the ported version of the muzzle weight is installed. I replaced my ported weight with the "conventional recoil" - CR - weight and it is no louder than a conventional rifle.

The device does add 2 - 2 1/2" of overall length to the rifle, which in all honesty the only criticism of the BOSS I have.

thanks

thanks for the quick replies. in your opinons would the browning bar (no boss) be a good rifle (auto) choice. thanks

The BAR is a well made rifle generally known for good accuracy. The problem was that a few would not shoot well no matter what ammo was fired in them.

The BOSS was developed by Browning engineers for the specific purpose of fixing the sometimes erratic accuracy in the BAR. Rifles that sprayed bullets all over the paper could become tack-drivers when the adjustable weight was added to them.

The bigger question however is how you are going to use the rifle. An auto-loader is usually used at short to medium range in heavy cover at sometimes moving targets where a fairly high rate of fire is more important than hitting golf balls at 200 yards.

If you are planning on hunting over cultivated fiels of logging slashes I would advise you look at a good quality bolt action rifle. For the cost of a BAR you can purchase a pretty nice turn-bolt.

A buddy of mine has the boss system. Accurate, but he ended up replacing the boss muzzle brake with a solid one. It was so loud the rifle couldnt be shot in some situations. Example... If you were hunting with someone and were in close proximity you would deafen your partner as well as piss him off for life.

Pros-you can tune the gun for best accuracy with a given load

Cons
-extremely loud, one shot without hearing protection will cause your ears to ring
-Handloading and proper load development will deliver groups as small or smaller without a boss.
-boss equipped rifles have shorter barrels and produce less velocity than non boss equipped rifles
-My boss kept coming loose which changed the point of impact.

I don't like Bosses...they're loud obnoxious, ugly...oh wait we're talking about gun accessories aren't we?
I'm retired, so ain't got a Boss....unless you count the Missus and she is quiet , agreeable and pretty

Had a super grade model 70 with the boss, it was very very accurate. It was also way too loud for me even with hearing protection. I got the cr insert to fix that.
It wouldn't hold it's accuracy with a temperature change. I could shoot the identical load and get 3/4" groups in the summer, in the fall it would open up to 3"!
Ended up getting a cap machined for it that covered the threads so it didn't feel like it was 5 feet long in the bush and then sold it later. It always came loose too.
They are okay for a target rifle but I won't own another.
