Boss?

Are you referring to the Browning Boss system? I may be mistaken, but I thought it was a device for tuning the harmonics of your barrel. Twisted one way or the other would move weight forwards or backwards on the barrel end and supposedly find a sweet spot for tighter groupings.

I didn't think it had anything to do with reducing recoil. Maybe I am thinking of something else.
 
Yes, the Browning Boss system does reduce recoil and muzzle jump also, I have one on my 30.06 A-Bolt.
I don't think there is any other "Boss" system other than the Browning system to which I have seen on the Winchesters also.

One thing about this set up though - it's very loud for the shooter, especially if it's one of those quick shots while hunting and you don't have any hearing protection on.
 
The original Boss was a combination barrrel tuner/muzzle brake. Then there was a version which was a tuner only. The Boss is a proprietary design. A barrel tuner works by shifting a mass at the muzzle to alter barrel vibration patterns. They are commonly used on .22 benchrest rifles. The new Ruger target mini has a tuner.
A tuner adjusts the barrel for the ammunition; a handloader can adjust the ammunition for the barrel. Similar results.
 
agree with all the above. the other item is that the browning BOSS is like a polychoke on a shotgun barrel.UGLY.IMHO and i'm sure others thought that way as well.
 
A feller showed up at the range last year with one of those on the end of the barrel, he started to unload his stuff, when he discovered that he had left the paper with his "settings" at home, he packed up and left, I just kept shooting, never saw him again. Probably don't have to spend any range time with them once you have the settings, I'm sure all the benchrest shooters are using them.
