A while ago I was sighting in my red dot on my new 858 and had the end of my laser bore sighter, unbenounced to me, get stuck in the barrel.

Two seconds after after I took the shot I noticed my sighter sitting on the bench minus the end. The blockage caused a ringing of the rifling about 3 inches from the crown.

I talked to Wolverine and was told that it was cost prohiitive to replace the barrel.

It really hurts as the gun is in perfect condition. I was so proud of it untill that mishap.

What would you guys recomend? As anyone had a similar situation and how much did it effect the accuracy?

Make it into a VZ 58. All you need do is cut it down, thread the muzzle and move the sight back. The cost of that would not be prohibitive.

I spoke w/ Wolverine about replacing barrels, just for interest sake, and they told me the same thing.

Talk to a custom gunsmith. See what they have to say. I don't know what sort of barrel might be milled to fit, but a competent gunny could tell you. If not, send it my way, I'll give you a couple cases of beer for it.

1. Shoot it. You might be lucky.
2. Ream the bore back beyond the ring.
3. Call the CFC and get chapter and verse on shortening the barrel. Make sure they will accept it reclassified as restricted.
4. Rebarrel it. A Lee Enfield barrel could probably be used, bore dimensions are likely close enough. If you have to pay commercial rates, this could be expensive.
5. Sell it as is, put the money towards a new one. Chalk it up as a lesson.
If it were my rifle, I would kick myself in the butt, try #2, if that didn't work, try #3. Or, I would rebarrel. But I do my own smithing, so the major cost would be the reamer and gauges.

Well, that saves a toll free call to the techs at the CFC.....
And its not 18.5".....

Oops - I see the barrel is ringed 3" in - its not just a bulged muzzle.

Don't know how the barrel is fitted. If it is threaded, rebarrelling would be traditional. If it is pressed and pinned, it gets more interesting. Lee Enfield barrels have been converted to 7.62x39, a bubba'd rifle can be had for less than the cost of a detached barrel.

I'll give ya 200 bucks:). Otherwise you should buy a 6.5mm barrel from tradex and re-machine it to fit. Then order a custom reamer and make a 6.5\39. :D

Too bad the mags aren't bigger, it would make a nice grendel.
