Bought a Beretta over under with 200 rounds of ammo for 220$. I bought it un-seen and didn't ask many questions. Wasn't sure what I was getting but it is in great shape I doubt it has seen more than a few boxes of shells. It's my first double and I would like to hear your opinions on it and anything you might be able to tell me about the model. Can't wait to hit the hills for grouse might even knock my Beretta Semi off the top of the heap and become my new favorite toy for grouse I can't believe how well it shoulders.

The transfer papers label the model as a GAMMA although it is not indicated on the gun itself. It is fairly plain with run of the mill wood and seems a plain jane model compared to most Beretta's I have seen. It has no art except for designs on the action lever. The chamber is horizontally grooved with a dull nickel finish. It is labelled on the barrel with Beretta-Dr. Franco and labelled above the chamber with hardened steel made in Italy and is a 3" magnum. Single trigger. have been trying to research the model and learn a little more about it without much luck. Don't even know what chokes it has?

Dr. F

The gun you have was made by Dr. Franco Beretta, not Pietro Beretta. They are two separate companies. The gamma models came in standard, deluxe, and target versions. They were imported from 1984-88. The dull grey finish is called French case hardening, which is also called French grey. Their lowest grade was Beta (single barrel), then Francia (410 SxS only), America (410 O/U only), Alpha (12,16,20 SxS), Europa (410 O/U only), Gamma (12,16,20 SxS), Black Diamond Field (12,16,20 O/U) , up to their Grades 1, 2, 3, and 4 (12,16,20 O/U). New in box in standard configuration the Beta Three was $150, Francia $250, America $325, Alpha Three $400, Europa $400, Gamma $450, Black Diamond $975, Grades 1 $1,150, 2 $1,700, 3 $2,500, and 4 $3,250.

The Gamma broke down like this

NIB Exc. V.Good Good Fair Poor
Standard 450 375 300 225 150 100
Deluxe 650 575 500 400 250 125
Target 600 500 450 375 300 150

The Gamma came in 12, 16, and 20 gauge with 26" or 28" barrels, single trigger, and automatic ejectors. Blued barrels, French case hardening, and a walnut stock.

This is from a 2004 Standard Catalog of Firearms and is in U.S. dollars. They sound like good guns. Some of the premium paid for Pietro Beretta is likely for the name. Hope this helps. Enjoy your gun.

Chokes

Sorry, WC. They don't mention chokes but they probably came in a selection based on the gauge, barrel length, and model. Usually the shorter barrels were more open and the target models were tight for trap and open for skeet. The best way to determine the choke would be to pattern the gun. You got a great deal, take $40 off for the shells and you got a good Italian o/u in excellent shape for $180! At that price I would shoot it to see if I liked it. If I liked it and the chokes weren't right for my needs I would have choke tubes installed. If the single trigger is selective I'd leave the barrel with the choke I'd always use and just tube one.

Sounds like a great little gun. Twenty gauge my personal favorite for grouse and woodcock. Heck I'd give $220 for the gun alone. Just kidding I have too many now. I bet you'll not want to lug the semi after you use that one. You also won't leave empties in your favorite grouse covers.
Good luck enjoy it.:p
